Random events don't have to be completely random things that take people unaware. I Think the sandworm would be a predictable event, you could scout first, find out where the sandworm is, if its far away launch your attack against the other person base. If you dont' scout where it is, then you run the risk that it might be there. That adds an element of skill, rather than pure randomness.

Give a predtictable A.I to the sandworm. Hostile to any units it encounters. Then heads to centre of largest metal source, and patrols, this could be based on wreckage as well. If u see no metal, they u won't expect to see a sandworm, and you probably won't.

By adding a predictable, but not always known event, u can create a random event which people can prepare for, rather than getting card drawn from a pack which says. A giant foot comes down from the sky and squashes you, Game over.

I think if u can prepare for the random event, it shouldn't be a problem. But the random event should not be all powerful. I think its doable, even for so called players who dislike random events. Think about this, build weather station, predicts storm will come in ten days, u get the warning u build a giant metal rod. Town saved. Because you were prepared, with your weather station. Still random event.

I want to avoid tracking sandworms because that's just boring.

The predictable part is, large groups of units will attract sandworms and smaller ones won't. Assuming your on the sandy part of the map. It's like a dangerous sea voyage without the boats or water.

Aha, listen. Dune is a novel written in the year 1965. The movie has been released 30 years ago. We're speaking about a mod with Sandworms and melange... because... because everyone would love a Dune mod. And you expect me to believe that you guys do not know anything about?

    C'mon... ;)

Beside, the end is much, much more than just a nuke on a wall. As I bet you know.

The novel is E-P-I-C. I've read it three times, and never gone tired of it.

I hope you stayed clear from the rest because boy did the quality degrade from one to the next... in wanting to provide more detail much of Dune's original mystery is essentially lost or even ridiculed.
One way to make the first book stand out even more, though.

it would only be on desert planets though so what's the harm? and It's not like Metal planets won't have game-changing things too?

you be like "alright let's get the hell of his rock! now what's that other planet we have in the system... oh not a desert planet oh no! Dude can't we try to win the battle here instead?" -"I already told you it's over! we gotta scram!" -"ooohhhh nooo"

And nobody forces you to build things on top of desert sand.

So are we ok with the idea of building AoE sandworm exclusion-zone thingies?

Which ones are u referring too? The chronicles of Dune? or the Children of Dune? Or the hungry hungry hungry Sandworm? In fact the film of the original Dune, is worth seeing, just to see a bunch of people riding on giant sandworms with terrible special effects, and then noticing I can't believe that actor is actually in this film.

Wait hes not an actor hes a singer and used to be in a band. its related to what bees and wasps do.

I've read the entire saga twice. Not everyone sees the same in same things. I did enjoy good part of the whole. No, it didn't disappoint me.

But sure, I agree on the first book being an unchallenged masterpiece.

The modder in me saw "Coherent Sandworm" and I was utterly confused.

When I saw your title of planetary Moderator I was also confused my overlord and ruler of this world, Lord Raevn.

Just for fun, anyone else come to the conclusion that basically the entire Dune empire ran of sandworm poop?

Did the modder in you also say "help make this because sandworms are awesome"?

The oil industry is built on dead animals.

Never been called "Lord Raevn" before. Not that I couldn't get used to it :D

Unfortunately, I'm not really a modeller. If someone makes the model, then I'd be happy to help with the rest of the unit.

I can use Blender, I just have no creative ability whatsover in making models. I tried once, and was about as successful as grumpy cat trying to have a good day.

I dread to think of the complexity of a decent sandworm model :S

You're not very good at funny similes either. Let me help:
"As successful as a rocketship made of chocolate fudge"
"As successful as the house-of-cards building company in Tornado Alley"
"As successful as a nuclear reactor in a kindergarten"

Surely it's not too hard, it is a giant worm after all:
