I think a way to make the bomb bug bots to be more effective would be to give them a short range little HUH onto the enemy. So they have to get close to jump but they dont have to just walk into them and get gunned down. So THEY get the last laugh
What about a leaping gait that would make them less of an easy target at all times that they are moving? Just a thought.
meh. right now, bomb bots just sit there when i tell them to specifically attack something. maybe i'm doing it wrong, i dunno.
guy at my work has been making them in batches and then making them do planetwide patrol and they go around and harass the hell out of everything. Not sure if its entirely effective, but certainly good for knocking out lone metal extractors without actually looking for them.
I once made 10 factories put the factories on patrol and spammed them. It didn't work out so well, unless its chagned since I've done it there attention radius for what they attack is really low. So they sometimes walk past a mex they could see in there sight radius but wouldn't move to blow up. The bomb doesn't seem to be programmed as a weapon, more a situation that if it moves towards a target and gets in range it explodes. Hopefully they fix them. Go planet of the spiders.
Well right now they can only be used in an effective way by giving them an area patrol where they should attack. Area attack doesnt work because they just kill one target and then stop moving and normal attack commands are completely useless. But if you build about 200 factories with endless bomb bot production it can still get fairly fun
The way I imagine this is that they would crawl as now, but leap at the last second onto their target. This would make them harder to hit during that quick leap, making them more effective. Also it would just look cool.
Thank you for the new plans to make the other guys game miserable. I dont know if i like the idea of a jumping bomb.. can it go over my walls? I can see a massive wave of them just jumping over walls and killing everything.. *shiver*
I doubt anything crazy in the regards of jumping, just more similar to what nanolathe had mentioned. If I understood him correctly, it would leap on its attack. So once its in range it is immune to damage the moment it lurches forward to explode. That way they are not just being picked off as soon as anything is in range to shoot them. But not so much jumping high in the air to go over obstacles.
I didnt see the "gait" part of the sentence somehow. So instead its just in a constant state of erratic movement. Ya that works for me, might be a tad bit hard to balance, im envisioning commanders having a hard time shooting them without some major uber cannon use. Perhaps the smaller teir laser defense could have better tracking to give it a better use against units such as this. ps ur new avatar is my colleagues design. Glad to see his kickstarter pushed through.
Any form of tracking weapon like a missile or very fast traveling projectile such as a laser should be able to take out a bomb-bot even if it is jumping like a flea. All you'd need is a sufficient rate of fire and it's possible that a single emplacement could theoretically hold of a grossly more costly force of just jumping bombs. And yes, the new Avatar is lovely and I'm glad that the Darkest Dungeon is doing well on Kickstarter.
Instead of make them jump to make them harder targets, they could also add some more health to them.. so they wont die in one or two hits.. Because as i read in the comments, it is that they die to fast.. or get easy killed. Just another lil suggestion. Maybe they could give them also a abillity to get stealth? Like they cant get to close to raders otherwise they will get spotted.. With that i dont mean the range of what an satalite has now.. but just like 10meters away from it..
I would not mind to make them more tough and reduce their damage a bit, good trade-off . Other fun solution would be ability to order them bury into the ground and turn them into mines .
I would like to see suicide units like this really useful, not just a nitch like you always see. A good health pool (after all, bombs are simple, and armor turns to shrapnel) would let them function almost like tanks for the other bots.
