So I just fired up a game and played with the music volume turned up. It does add a lot to the perceived sound quality of the game as a whole. (In fact I'd say you need to up the ante on the rest of the sounds to keep up.) And it really helps the better parts sing. Especially the quieter bits.
My problem is still those parts are few and far between, and far too short.
Unfortunately the bit that probably needed it the most sounds to have benefited the least. But overall a good performance.

I do like this type of music in general, but this score just isn't speaking to the grand strategy, the large battles or the drama of smashing planets in the way that I would have maybe hoped. To put it in more subjective terms. I don't think it has really found its own voice. Excepting the main theme which I'm most disappointed with because it had the most potential.

Then again I am holding it to the insanely high standard set by Soule. Maybe that isn't realistic?

In my opinion this is comparable to or better than Soule's music. Howard is a god!

Soule is one of the best composers in the business. So I can't say that holds true.

EDIT: Oh it's in FMOD format. Just taking a more focused listen on its own then. My impression with that so far is that the ADPCM compression isn't doing it any favors. Consider vorbis. that's worked out well for a lot of games.

FURTHER EDIT: So that loss of quality seems to have been a faulty extraction. I found a better method of listening to the files.

Jeremy is actually a really good friend of mine and I could have had him do the music, but I really wanted Howard to get a shot. I'm really happy with how it turned out personally.

As am I. Honestly, one of my thoughts is maybe it doesn't set out that much because people have gotten used to hearing the rough music that they are used to the songs themselves so the "newer music" doesn't "shock and stun" them as much.

Thus is the curse of being a part of the early beta. I thought the parts it added were powerhouses, and the parts that were from old music were done better in the new mix (maybe you need a learned taste for listening internally to music to pick up on the crispness of each insturment)

I'm not saying anything bad about Jeremy Soule. His work on TA and Skyrim still makes him the king of video game music. Today's soundtrack release puts Howard in that same class though.

Naturally today is the day my modem decided to break down and cry itself slowly to sleep while I shouted and swore at it.

I want to hear the music :(

I'm not saying that Soule is the only guy who could do the job. But I am just not satisfied with how it did turn out.

Tbh, 100% I play I sit on TS with someone and having anything playing the background is annoying. Anything. Even music I like.

I always play with disabled music, no matter what good it is.

Between the main music file and the miscellaneous one, there is about an hour and 20 minutes of music! It's going to take a lot of planet smashing to hear this all, especially since the miscellaneous file all seems to be triggered contextually.
