bmb, I have never heard of a software project going into gamma. I've seen multiple betas or multiple release candidates but never a gamma. This is bold new territory were no software developer has gone before.

Pretty sure they've used gamma since at least the 80's, they just don't tell you about it anymore. Gamma is just a fancy term for release candidate.

Yup. They can call it whatever they want as long as they're clear about it. The Steam community is going to complain a lot though. Those people really don't like seeing something unexpected.

Never heard of a gamma phase before. Somebody could have use it at one point in time. Big Blue has been using alpha/beta since the lease the 50s at least.

Different companies call it different things, release candidate, delta, gamma, probably some terms I've never heard about too. It all means the same thing though. Final prerelease testing.

Bungie notably used the term gamma testing publically.

Doesn't the new launcher allow for two versions? Stable and unstable? That would be kinda a cool way to make gamma different than beta... Two builds on the go at once.

Well the question is how does Uber define gamma? That's what really matters here and that is the definition I will use.

Well yes but it allows at the moment multiple development builds. The internal one and the one that is released to player base. Neither one of them I would consider stable. One is just more bleeding edge.

So instead of a GM build will we have an Omega build?
