When I play PA on Steam version, I get much less FPS than when I launch the game through non-steam launcher. The graphic settings are identical on both versions. Does it happen to anyone else? Is it a common issue?

It's these steam overlay that is causing this issue. Disable overlay and should resolve it. Instructions are below:

Yes. As @lokiCML noticed it's usually related to Steam overlay.

No. While overlay affect performance for every player (and actually for every game on Steam) not everyone have serious performance issues in PA.

It's known that some players have much lower performance when run game though Steam and it's depends on lot of different factors so it's not common issue. E.g it's always caused by Steam overlay.

It's usually not cause any serious FPS drops, but I can say for sure it's give -1/-3 FPS in every game.

Three more frames per second still matter for me and in PA every single FPS point is worth its weight in gold :D Thank you again for explanation :)

I get better FPS in the non-steam version. I'm sticking with non-steam version for the foreseeable future.

It happens because the steam overlay actually injects itself into the games render loop much like a wall hack would. It sometimes doesn't do it in the most efficient way(+ the process just slows stuff down).
