That doesn't matter. What matters is if it's fun or not. Realism has already given way to fun for a lot of aspect of this game including orbital units and celestial bodies. Realism is never a good case for including or removing any feature, only a nice-to-have. Who cares about current technology limits anyway, remember this is a super-future war between robots after all...

I have no problem with a generalist being added, so long as it's balanced in such a way that building a mix of specialists is superior.

My only beef with the "super advanced" robot argument is that these robots are clearly obsessed with way humans fought wars in the 19th and 20th century. Battleships have been retired for decades now, flak guns are ancient history, little running robots have no technical or tactical advantage that couldn't be delivered better by a more novel locomotion design. There's just no place in modern warfare for them. Infact, modern infantry only exist because population control is the primary duty of the military. We only send infantry in for occupations, there's no occupation if you destroy everything. Speaking of destroying everything... Planet smashing is probably the single least efficient use of kinetic energy ever imagined (KEWs are find, but not planet sized KEWs are silly).

I actually have the suspicion that in the long lost buried depths of the lore the robots were built for our entertainment. Clearly the "game" simply grew out of hand and destroyed humanity like an industrial accident gone super wrong. Our robots are simply playing out the most extreme spectator sport ever imagined. And to me... that's perfectly OK.

Yes, when it is logically obvious and adds to the game. Rock V Scissor V Paper, to design the whole game around it, is a bad idea. But to argue that every unit should be able to be effective against another I think its equally absurd.

I love having to make multi layered defence. It encourages thought to go into the mix of structures used to defend any given point. I'd rather that than have one structure I can just ring my entire base in. See Missile Towers in Original TA.

Ask yourself why can't missile turrets also attack orbital?

Whatever type of alcohol you are imbibing must be damn good :p

One turret to rule them all is not a strong argument for better game play. It cannot be

I think half the problem with the missile turret is the lack of real distinction between tanks and bots. If we added damage mitigation from armor tanks could be made far more resilient to rapid fire weapons while bots would be protected from anti-tank fire by loosing most of the DPS to overkill. If we had this kind of distinction missile turrets could target Air and tanks with high damage missiles but would be weak vs Dox, or a rapid fire weapon could target air or dox and be weak vs tanks.

If you have 3 sides of balance you can be strong vs 2 and weak vs 1. Zerohour and several other RTS games do this. This prevents spamming a single turret type while still making them less role dedicated. Right now Bots and Tanks are still too similar and it's simply air vs ground. If you are effective vs both you have an omni-turret and no reason to build any other.

I haven't personally played with the new changes so I'll defer judgement until I get the chance to play a few games. No if only uber could get that latest build nice and stable for this weekend (please please please)

This would actually be a pretty good solution, kinda like it.

This is exactly how I feel. I think it can be done, or should at least be tried.

Id like missile turrets to be unable to shoot at ground targets OVER walls, but to still be able to shoot them when they are also exposed.

This is exactly what I'm hoping for. Since missile towers no longer need to be balanced against ground units, they can be buffed with better range and damage against air. I would love to see them turned into proper SAM sites, and they would be a nice compliment to the short range AOE on the flak cannons. Currently, flak makes the missile turrets fairly redundant for AA.

When you make aggressive and demeaning statements like this it makes me completely overlook all of your posts.

    Let's please keep things civil.

Would you guys please stop fighting straw men? No one, I repeat NO ONE has suggested that missile towers should be stronger vs air and ground than they are right now.
Right now, they are not a one-stop solution to all invasions. Actually, they kind of suck against serious numbers of anything, especially ground.
Please stop telling us that you don't want a game where one tower is all you need. We know that. We agree with you, we don't want that either. It has never been proposed by anyone. It is not the only way to implement multifunctional towers.

As to the point that no one uses single lasers right now - well, why do we have 3 laser towers anyway? perhaps we should keep the missile towers as is, and remove the lowest tier of lasers?

I'm actually going to reserve my judgement of this until we see how it plays out.

Remember what happened when Pounders(then Ants) lost the ability to shoot air? Everyone was freaking out, but suddenly, air actually became useful.

So, let us see where this leads my friends, don't freak out, don't get angry. Enjoy the ride and if it really, really sucks, they'll probably change it.

P.S. For all we know they could be adding in another a purpose tower that's different from the missile tower.

It seems to me that a missile tower to really come into its own should have a different role from lasers and flak. Namely range and precision. Whereas flak and lasers are close range domination weapons, keeping missiles low damage but giving it a long range would probably make it make more sense. The basic missile tower would be like a small version of the catapult.

If you don't have any better way to build a game, go nuts. Just don't go crying when it turns out lame.

A lot of other RTS games were able to figure out how to work Anti air without using hard targeting limits.
