Hi. I've pretty much given up on finding the solution to this on my own. Hopefully someone here can help me out. I've tried to launch the game from both Steam and the PA Launcher, but neither one works. The game immediately crashes upon launch. I don't get any sort of load screen or anything. It's just black, then instant crash. I've updated every driver (I believe), this is a brand new installation of windows, and I have more than enough power to run this. I've posted dxdiag.txt below along with the log file.

A little more info: I have USB speakers, but I disabled those and tried using headphones running straight through to my motherboard which uses an onboard soundcard (this has worked for several older games that run into a problem with USB speakers). I've read reports of integrated gpu's failing, but I haven't heard anything about regular soundcards not working. I updated the drivers from Asus's website just to be sure, and that hasn't solved the problem. I also installed the most recent drivers from nvidia (last updated Jan. 27).

Do you have any Stardock software installed, or other programs that hook into applications like screen recorders (Dxtroy),

It maybe another software running causing crash,
I have issues with Windows Blinds (Startdock) and others have reported other software like Dxtory and performance boosters like Virtu MVP cause crashes.

From the PA log file, it looks like a coherant UI crash,

Do you have .net framework installed and updated and latest Direct X installed.

Check this my post in other topic:

You most likely have Coherent crash too so it's worth to try 32-bit executable from non-Steam version.

Hi, and thank you all for getting back with me.

    First,
Like I said, this is a totally fresh install of windows (a bit of research on ACHI and my particular mobo led me to roll back to win7). There is no extra software like that. To be safe, I disabled all boot-services and restarted windows to try again. I also tried disabling the steam-community overlay thing, so I'm fairly confident it isn't that

    Second, on the coherant crashes:

As far as I can tell, I have installed every direct X file mentioned on the forum (in the stickies and in other posts) and the .NET framework has been updated as well. Again, I tried to get the latest version from microsoft, which I believe I did, but I also used the recommended files that you all recommend on the forums.

I tried your suggestion about opening the game from the x86 folder before I posted this, which didn't work. I went back however and played around a little inside the game's install directory (I noticed the x64 folder - that also didn't work, though I expected that outcome) and found another folder which isn't mentioned a whole lot (or at all, as far I can tell) called the 'PA' folder. There's another executable within that folder that I tried which enabled me to launch the game. After setting all settings on low (anything above low caused instant crashes on game start) I was able to play the game, and actually finish a whole game vs another AI.

For reference, the file is located at

    "C:\...\Steam\SteamApps\common\Planetary Annihilation\PA\PA.exe

Maybe I'm confused, and the non-steam version just installed it there since I selected the same folder as the install location for steam, but that worked.

Can you please try to reproduce that crash with higher settings and then upload log file and crash dump for me?

    Here is how-to:
    http://steamcommunity.com/app/233250/discussions/2/648814845443326834/

This file is just launcher for game that check your OS architecture and run 64-bit (bin_x64/PA.exe) or 32-bit (bin_x86/PA.exe). So most likely 64-bit executable worked for you and you can run it directly though launcher.

Are you sure you running executable you said? According to log you're used "bin_x86/PA.exe" instead.

Also if you only able to run PA.exe from bin_x86 directory you need apply 4GB patch on it:
    http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php
Without patch it's only able to use ~2GB RAM and it's will crash like that all the time.

Oh that may be the case, actually. I should mention that the x86 version only works from within the PA folder, i.e.,

    C:\...\SteamApps\common\Planetary Annihilation\PA\bin_x86\PA.exe

    and not

    C:\...\SteamApps\common\Planetary Annihilation\bin_x86\PA.exe

    - I just applied the patch, just to see if that made a difference. In this case, I had forgotten to reset my settings back to low, and when the game asked me if I wanted to reconnect with my previous game, I accidentally clicked 'reconnect.' I expected a crash (because uber settings) but the game actually started running and is quite smooth under these conditions, so thank you.
