An explanation of the title. EDITBECAUSECONTEXT: Totally not a suggest a megabot thread, because this is about special unicorn fairy units. Suggest specific "SUF" units here so that people can argue over how valid an idea they are. Keep your arguments contained to specific SUF's and everything will be hunky dory. I'll try to update this post with the suggestions, but it's just as likely for me to abandon doing that out of boredom. So read the thread. LIST: Thrower Fairy here Healer Unicorn here SUF 00Awesome here
No context? And falls under the duplicate threads rule. I'd love to have blue winged fairies with wands that have hearts on the end. That or unicorns that shoot rainbows.
This is a specific offshoot of the megabot thread, differing from both the unit suggestion threads and the megabot thread in focus. I ran a search on megabot before posting this, came up with nothing. Granted, the search on this forums does weird things at times, if I missed something I'll gladly take this down. EDIT: Removed edit, move along
the c&c fan in me from yesteryear enjoyed Yuri's units - threw all kinds of monkey wrenches into your plans as they mind-controlled and took over your units. hard to envision a place for such mischief in PA, but hey; who knows. can't deny that it's FUN, even if impossible to balance.
I posted these in the other thread, but I guess I'll post em here. To try to not invalidate lower tier units and promote mixed armies... 1. A SUF healer that is armed with a large repair field (like the combat fabbers) and weaponized nanolathes. Reclaims enemy units that get too close (fairly short range) but also heals armies that surround it. If you give the unit a very long heal time, it won't be effective in healing other megabots (kind of like how SupCom: FA reduced the effectiveness of build-assiting nukes), so you'd be better off surrounding it with T1/T2 armies for it to keep healed. 2. A SUF that uses smaller units as the ammunition for it's weapons. Not a unit cannon to get units from point A to point B, but it literally fires units from it's weapons. It could automatically grab any nearby units and either nanolathe them into actual projectiles, or it could straight up fire them. Damage and or rate of fire could be based on the size of unit, surround it with doxes and you get a rapid fire low damage unit-machine gun. Surround it with Levelers and you get a slower firing high damage cannon. Try to send it alone and it has nothing to shoot, don't bring enough T1 / T2 units with it and it runs out of ammo.
I actually feel like both of those would make better base defenses than units. They sound like they'd feel more at home at your base. Still awesome either way. I made this suggestion ages ago, but I'm not going to bother looking for it again to quote. SUF 00Awesome So tall that it cannot shoot at ground units with its laser vision. It can be fired upon by both anti-air(eye level is air unit level) and anti ground(anklebiters). Blocks line of fire for artillery. Can walk into deep water, in which case it looses the ability to fire on air and becomes able to fire on naval. Basically a bigass tank that uses its size as a fundamental mechanic, and its health as a tool to fill that role. Versatile enough to not be stupidly situational. Useful enough that you'd want it in your mix. Useless against ground units which form the brunt of a military.
They probably would work fairly well as defensive units, but again only if you had an army for them to heal or shoot Edit: I guess with the 2nd one that shoots units, whether or not it can pick up and shoot enemy units as well would change it's balance, though marching it alone would still let it get shot up a bunch before it was in range to pick up an enemy unit. So SUF 00Awesome can only shoot at air (what about orbital?) with it's laser eye (so like an anti-air galactic colossus), does it have any ground attack at all, can it step on units?
Name: Special Unicorn Fairy Role: Siegebreaker Usage: This unit is used to establish beach heads on enemy worlds where there is no allied presence. Can't only be transported via teleport because it is physically too massive to carry on an interstellar transport and would not survive re-entry on most worlds. Weapons: rapid fire, low damage, wide splash ground weapons and basic anti air capability (maybe basic anti orbital and anti-nuke as well). Defenses: Buckets of health Cost: Lots Strong against: Large groups of tightly packed Ground / Naval / Structure units and bombers Weak against: widely spaced Ground / Naval / Structure units, artillery, mass air units and orbital lasers Basically this unit is strong vs large groups but easily dealt with on it's own or without other units as support, forcing players to diversify their ground army to other units besides this 1. Say it's weapon does 1/5 the damage needed to kill an ant but it has the splash area to hit 20 at a time if they are clumped. That means if they send a blob straight at this unit alone it will all die to 5 hits, but if they send 1 at a time or surround it they will still only die after 5 hits each. That makes it great at attacking a turtled base that has been left alone to stockpile, but not good to use in a more prolonged, tactical fight without support. Mass air would also be a problem for this unit to deal with alone. Good for defending the gate you make on enemy planets against raiding squads until you get an established base. Maybe if it's cost is crazy you can add an anti-nuke launcher and mini-umbrella on it to give it all the utility needed for establishing new bases when nukes and orbital swarms are prevalent and giving basic ground armies some defense against those things when these guys are sprinkled in. Also good for the front line of assaults to soften the enemy for the waves behind it and to soak the artillery fire on the way there.
I go back and forth on the stepping on units thing. Definitely something worth looking into, but not necessary for the unit. On one hand, it'd be super cool. On the other hand it'd feel a tad microey for my tastes.
I'd kind'a like some sort of imperial walker. To keep it underpowered, imagine that it can't really turn, or does so very, very slowly. So you'd build it out in the terrain, across from the the enemy's fortifications, and once you had a decent amount of them ready (would take a long time), they'd start stomping ahead. It would be terrible against anyone with a spread out base, but awesome (and look amazing) against a marginot line.
