Was thinking about this earlier. Why not have different themed models of units? Can we alter the model files to make our own if we wanted? We could change orbital fighters into Xwings and Levelers into ATATs. Or change Bots into LightBikes and Tanks into the glowey tank things from Tron Etc etc. I understand this could be a metric frack-ton of work....but i'm not very good at 3D modeling so here I am. Anyone else like this idea and want to see it?
Sounds like it would work. There is already a mod to turn the delta into a tank commander. This would be very limited though because it would have no effect on gameplay and other players would still see the original units. Still, it could be fun to be able to play with that. It probably isn't worth the work unless as a first step to a conversion mod once we get the server. I expect star wars and Stargate mods to start showing up not too long after the server gets released.
So I threw all my F302s at him with the Sherman's running interference up front. Or even better: I hit his ATSTs with snowspeeders and used my ion cannon to kill his transports.
I think for now the best way to make progress toward theming the game is to start with a lot of smaller mods so we can be ready when we get the sever. I have the planet name mod and lavasnake is working on one for renaming units. If he adds support for easily switching the theme in settings, we will be making good progress toward that goal. A mod for changing the UI skin would be great too, but should probably wait until we see whatever changes uber plans to make to the ui soon. It might be easier to start with a sound effects theme mod and go from there. Star wars sound effects would be fun.
Oh yes. Imagine orbital fighters making a tie fighter whooshing sound when they passed you... Interesting idea. For the smaller mods. Now if we could make a mod that combined them all....
I would be happy with just replacing the Holkins sound effect with the big bertha. Actually, a Total Annihilation sound mod would be amazing.
I assume that a mod to combine them all would be easy enough later on. For now it would be easier to work on smaller pieces at a time. That still wouldn't stop all these mods from sharing the same option in the settings for choosing the theme.
Id live this as a client side mod, so I can use it when I want to, without disturbing other peoples games. Of course it wouldn't be allowed in like ranked or anything, too much potential for cheaters.
What we're talking about wouldn't really let you cheat. You would see an AT-ST, for example, but the opponent would still see an ant.
What if a player creates a visual mod that makes it easier to spot you when you are moving around, and other such little advantages to make you more visible through the fog of war. I wouldn't put it past players, they did it in WOW, they'll do it here.
Oh if you mean fog of war map hacks, that shouldn't even be possible. The server shouldn't even be sending that data to the client.
