    Hi guys,

I've been happily playing PA on my Windows 7 install, but I recently ran out of space on the partition, and I have formatted my 2nd SSD drive and put Windows 8.0 on it.

Now I was doing Windows 8.1 first, but turns out you can't turn off mouse acceleration on that OS. Well. Fine, then, I says. Windows 8.0 it is.

I install PA, install all the nice mods I use, then start it up, and I get the crash. PA.exe has stopped working. The crash report mentions the faulty module as CoherentUI64.dll.

    Attaching screenshot of error.

I look in the log and the crashdump didn't upload. I'll attach them here. This forum wont let me upload the .dmp file.

My question is has anyone else seen this on Win8? Why won't it work? :(

This is the only game I play these days but I don't want another wasted day of work setting up windows just so i can get my game working again. I really hope there is a fix. In the meantime since I have the option available to me, I'll start gutting my Win7 partition of installed programs just so I can get my PA fix by booting back into windows 7.

I really want to solve this problem though.

    My hardware:

Z86 mobo (the ASRock ITX board) with a 2500K running at 4.0Ghz, 2x8GB DDR3-1600 RAM, and the Gigabyte Windforce GTX 670 with 3 big fans on it

Yes I have installed the latest nVidia drivers. The latest ones. From today.

I uninstalled all mods. Still same problem.
    Uninstalled mod manager. Same problem.
Deleted PA install folder. Reinstalled using installer. Same problem.

Edit: Looks like user speedyplague's topic is about a similar crash.

I am going back to windows 7.

    8 is unbearable :(

First check my signature and upload your DxDiag.txt.

Did you restarted your computer after you updated drivers? There was few players who have issue even after Nvidia driver updated, but problem disappear after restart.

    Yeah, I restarted.

I guess directX issues might contribute somehow to the Coherent UI failing.

I am getting the exact same issue on completely fresh Windows 7, by the way. Something about a fresh install now is completely failing with the PA launcher. Hopefully it is caused by something specific, a driver or something, that I haven't remembered to install.

    Heres my dxdiag.

I did some more testing and it looks like there is nothing wrong on Uber's side, the fresh install of PA runs fine from my old Windows 7 installation that I was playing the game on.

However on fresh Windows 7 installs, the crashes are instant, and it is almost certainly related to the Coherent UI system.

On my old Win7 install I can bring up the Coherent debugger from the install directory /Coherent/Debugger/Win64/Debugger.exe, it lets me open up a Chrome-style Web inspector. It's very cool. However on the new fresh Windows installs, this Debugger.exe also crashes instantly. Coherent just isn't happy with the way the OS is set up. I don't know what's missing, as I've now set up all the drivers, and Windows Device Manager is not complaining about missing drivers.

    Yes!

Fixed it. The directx_Jun2010_redist.exe (search google for "pa.exe crashes at launch") fixed it. Looks like Coherent is built with some hard dependency on an old DX9 runtime.

Is it really too much to ask for software makers to do *basic* things like check for module dependencies?

It might not be up to them, it might be part of the engine that requires that sort of thing, which would be nothing they can do anything about... As their using Coherent then yes there is nothing they can do its just part of it... Nice find though glad u got it fixed

It's a very valid request. As @vackillers said, it's not up to them however. Uber has outsourced UI engine development to a company called Coherent Labs, or not even outsourced, just straight up bought their product as I understand it. It's black box software for Uber, so quality assurance might be harder, or at very least less obvious.

The reason for outsourcing is ofc that the Kickstarter campaing alone raised more than double the goal, which made the list of features longer. Not to mention multiplatform support which always ends up more work than projected. So any help they can get is well needed, to release while we are still in 2010's. :D

    Just my uneducated thoughts. :)

Is it really too much to ask to install the required runtime dependencies? Or you could report it as a bug, that way Uber might be able to fix (or account for) it!

Good to hear you got it fixed though. I haven't had issues on Win8 / 8.1 myself, thankfully.

If you install game from Steam it's should install DirectX automatically already.
For launcher I guess Uber don't want to force download of DX redist for every player who run it first time.

Yeah it's clearly a case of a few (or even more likely, a single) dll files that should just get included in the install dir. It's just a matter of figuring out what it is. The crash reports are just very unhelpful, so the blame might land on whoever wrote the DLL loader in Coherent.

All I can offer is the knowledge that fresh Windows installs do not bundle whatever particular DLL this is. Getting the entire redistributable is possibly a bad workaround in the sense that installing that entire big package isn't strictly necessary.

It's not bad workaround, it's only workaround possible. As long as I know Microsoft doesn't allow distribution of particular files.
