Why are there mines for naval and not land?
we should have mines for land.
they would be identical in every away to the naval mines but be invisible to the enemy.
land mines would also not be seen when building, not would builders be seen building them.

Alternatively, there could be a mine layer unit which would properly mine a selected area.(rectangle selection please)

Not identical better have minelaunchers that spread small minefields torwards a selected direction .... building single mines is nothing
against the armies that get thrown around .... minelaunchers would be better for areadenial imo

We're planning to do land mines (and maybe even multiple types).

They've been talking about adding a mine layer unit for quite some time.

I don't remember if it actually worked like this, but I do have fond memories of picking up Mobile Bombs with transports in Total Annihilation and flying the transports over my enemy's base. I don't remember exactly what it did, but it was hilarious and caused many explosions. More effective than Bombers if more micro-intensive.

Land mines would have to be deployed in a very automated manner. I haven't tried out area commands yet, but ideally you would select an area to be saturated with mines, optionally select mine density, and then whatever mine-capable units you have selected scurry over to do their dirty work. Long-range artillery, aircraft and orbital platforms would be the ideal way to do this.

It's simply a more convenient way to do mines than something like the Podger or the... I don't remember the other Mine Truck unit from TA, where they had to roll all the way to the front lines at the speeds of an amputated bear, then probably get taken out by an errant Peewee or Guardian round. With mine-launching Artillery or Aircraft, you have a much safer investment that is both easier to use in terms of APM and much less rage-inducing when it's destroyed.
