Yeah, a Firefly assisting those Levelers would have solved your range problems. I might have even chosen T2 Bots to kill them off though, especially Stompers, for their range and speed advantages over Levelers. Speed and range kill in this mode. Also, a few laser defense towers early on might have helped you take out one, or two, Commanders, which would have significantly improved your odds of surviving. Hell even peppering the planet with Missile Defense Towers might have helped you grind them down. If they stay together to heal, then that reduces their scouting capabilities. I think it's all about attrition in this mode though. Either way, pretty interesting game mode.
I was in the 8 of the 2v8. Air units were never mentioned, I expect bombers would murder us, commanders aren't very good at hitting planes. Also air scouts would make it very easy to keep the 2 commanders away from the 8. I disagree that T1 defenses are worth building in this game mode, the 8 can always go around them and you can't afford to build enough early to make it worth while. You can't tell in the video, but our strategy was to keep our commanders spread out, follow the trails of mex and hope to stumble upon a base, we chose following the mex paths as you need metal to build. As such, a good strategy for the 2 would be to build in the areas where there were no or not many mex, we'd be much less likely to go there. Building ants, pelters and other offensive units that aren't levelers or catapults is probably a waste of resources, you aren't likely to build enough to take a commander down with the amount you build, resources are better spent getting to levelers as they take down commanders easy. Assuming air is not allowed, I'd go with a tank factory (rather than a bot factory) for skitters or build radars away from mex. Use these to help keep your commanders away from the attackers. Build random mex where possible and slowly sneak out a T2 fac away from mex. Then go for levelers, even a couple will make taking down the 8 easy. I think running your commander at the first sign of an enemy is a strong plan, every time a commander engaged in combat we would get our other commanders to surround the area which would help ensure a kill. Basically the 2 need to just keep their commanders alive as long as they can, any economy or units they can build is a huge advantage, so play like your commander is made of glass and build up sneaky resources until you can easily take down the enemy commanders. I'm not sure what the 8 can do to improve their chances, maybe keeping commanders in semi-groups, scouting near by to each other so they can call in reinforcements when required. We did do this, but there were a few times where we got quite split up. if the 2 building widely it would however counter this... All said, I don't think the 8 will win again, but I'm keen to give it another go
Yeah I'd like to try this again. I would definitely spam air scouts like mad, but I think this might actually make it too easy as you could almost always avoid the commanders. Skitter spam would be useful but not too game-breaking. Thoughts on restricting air or just air scouts?
