    Edit: Here's the news! http://www.kickstarter.com/projects...nihilation-a-next-generation-rts/posts/692860

I was just browsing the Steam forums, and noticed a player was asking about the Nordic Games announcement this morning. For those who missed it, you can find it here:

    http://www.nordicgames.at/index.php/article/planetary_annihilation_coming_to_retail_via_nordic_games

Brad is in the process of getting the word out about it, but I wanted to take a few minutes to explain what this means to everyone here.

First off, it's primarily for retail distribution, and their own online marketplace. They will be producing a retail box for world wide distribution when the game is released. While Nordic is a publisher, they are primarily working with as a partner on retail distribution. And they have been a fantastic group to work with!

How does this impact Kickstarter? It doesn't. Though they may be helping us with aspects of it, that is tangential.

Does this impact anyone already playing in any way? Nope.

We just consider this a very good thing that provides another way for people to be able to join the community and play the game. It was a question we got a LOT in the early months after the Kickstarter, and for obvious reasons, until we publicly announced it, we couldn't talk about it. Now we can! For people living in areas where doing a full gigabyte download is difficult, or people who simply like to get a physical box, this should help with that.

Any questions, just go ahead and post em. We'll answer, as always, everything we can! :)

I'm confused - what do they bring to the table that Uber isn't already able to offer directly? Could we get an ELI5?

So based on what I read, is Nordic just going to provide hard copies of PA? The article felt really unreadable and rambly :p

Simply? Manufacturing is a LOT of work, and a lot of time and resources. It also benefits from strong expertise in the matter.

While we could get boxes printed up and all that rigmarole, there is no reason to not work with a company that already has all that pipeline in place. Combined with getting boxes into all the big stores (Target, Best Buy, Future Shop, what have you), they can do it with less friction and with greater success than a small company like us can manage.

Basically, it comes down to knowing your strengths. While we could do all these things, it makes more sense to work with a partner that does it already.

This is very exciting news! :D

    [Edit]
This means hopefully PA will be on Sale at Wal-Mart. Nordic Games acquired THQ when it was going bankrupt and have put out The Darksiders and Red Faction games.

So in ELI5 terms, they're putting your game on CDs? ;)

I had to Google what it meant. "Explain Like I'm Five."

Yah, I figured it out. I just don't like spoiling the research opportunity for others. :)

I'm very happy to have PA in retail stores like all of the other RTS games I've worked on. The Nordic guys are truly a class act.

I had no idea it was Reddit-specific - I'm positive I've seen it used in other places.

But anyway, this is good news all round :)

It's possible that it originated from somewhere else, I only got introduced to the concept when Reddit made it a default sub.

But to stay on topic: Yay, the news is indeed great!

Didn't Nordic also acquire publishing rights to Sup Com?

I will see a game in stores, and remember when I helped fund it to take off.

That is exciting. Suddenly, I have a strong urge to buy risky stocks from starting off companies... lol.
