Hello, I just bought PA and played a few games while messing around with the settings. I've noticed quite a bit of lag and I wasn't sure if it was my computer or just the game. I get around 15 fps. I have an AMD 1090t @ 3.6 GHz six core and a radeon 6950 2gb so im not sure if its the hardware or the game thats causing lag. Thanks for the help, can't wait to start playing more
They are still working on optimizing the game, but one mistake I see people making is they try to play on systems with too many planets. Are you playing with three or less planets? More than that can cause problems for me. On the other hand, I tend to be pretty tolerant of low framerates and 15 fps doesn't significantly affect my gameplay.
Make sure you're not playing on a massive planet too, anything below ~800 should easily be playable. Also you should probably post your dxdiag (as an attachment) and make sure your drivers are up to date.
I see you're new to the forums, and welcome! You should do a search before posting, in accordance to forum rules. This question gets asked frequently. You should check out the FAQ. It answers your question.
Yeah, I'm playing on a map with only 2 planets and 1 enemy AI. And sorry about breaking the rules, it won't happen again
If you bought game though Steam try to use non-Steam launcher: https://store.uberent.com/Download/Install?titleId=4 Most likely game will perform much better without Steam.
To be fair I'm don't have understanding why it's happening. For long time I'm think that's Steam Overlay it's main issue because it's can be not optimized for 64-bit OpenGL game on Windows. But after multiple tests on different hardware I wasn't able to confirm it. Even with Steam overlay disabled game still have quite bad performance. Currently I think it's caused by CPU bottleneck varrak said about. It's affect all versions of game, but for some reason it's affect Steam version more for players with AMD hardware. I only have Windows installed on laptop with Intel HD, so I just can't make proper testing and as I see Linux version not affected by same problems. (while it's obviously have bunch of own unique issues)
What radius planets are you playing? I find 900+ really doesn't get great performance with my 6870. Also avoid Earth biomes with tons of trees. Also turn shadows off.
Steam is 32-bit on both Windows and Linux, but it's doesn't important because game itself only use Steamworks SDK which is obviously 64-bit. Still I can admit that most of Windows games is 32-bit and as result 64-bit stuff just might be less tested and less optimized.
I think people experiencing poor performance should clarify when the issue is occuring : From the very beginning or when having spawned many units ? Just because if it's when having spawned hundreds of units, then we're all concerned and there's nothing that can be done, until optmization has been performed. and by simply knowning that Batch rendering is not implemented yet for units, and requires optimization for trees rendering (as an example), i can predict a massive performance improvement when all this will be in place. I mean, unless you're having 5 fps from the very beginning of your game session, then it's all about being patient and waiting for the big jump. While running PA on my 770GTX_4gigs makes a difference compared to the exact same configuration with 660GTX_TI2gigs, I'm facing the same bottleneck when hundreds of units have been spawned. And i would not be surprised if that would be the same with a Titan or 780TI. Just because, and that's a rule of thumb, a more powerfull hardware will hardly help when optimization is not here. And that's true for any kind of code. Regarding the amount of Video memory required for this game, i'm quite happy to see that even with 1gig of DRAM it will be possible to play this game in good conditions. 2gigs would be better of course, and 4gigs seems to be for very large planetary systems.
