this is probably the wrong place to ask, but, how likely is it that you would find a large game such as this just by browsing open games? does it require a great deal of organisation on private chat thingies?

Most games that we organise of this size are passworded.

However if you do find a public one, you can join these large games with a vanilla client, it only requires that the host has tinkered with their game files.

Thanks for the info, I guess if I want to play big games I'll need to join a group or pray to the gods of the Internet
