I vote yes. Finding matches in the IRC chat is so much better. Seems to be a good community feature. Use it or don't use it, it'll be helpful for many people.

Aand I just made a thread on this as well.

Well, mine goes more in depth... and yours has a rather limited poll...

I vote yes as well. It's a great way to build a strong community by just having the right tools. In SMNC (one of Uber's other games) I remember spending most of my time out of game in the Global chat just chatting with other players and answering any questions I could.

I feel like with systems like IRC, people form better community's with better players, where a Global in game system is susceptible to less desirable participants.

So I'll be voting no in favour of mostly better run and nicer community chat tools.

Ign, that's why you give the power to the players to create private chat rooms.

I think global chat should be implemented eventually.

I know......but I am still in favour of a community run and operated system over a global and often automated alternative.

That is the case I will be making.

I am sorry I don't follow? How are those two mutually exclusive?

A community chat is going to be run by the players who want to create a system that is designed for them, and is usually populated by people of a similar mind set.

    You guys.

But a global chat gets filled all kinds of people, and more often then not people who do not represent the good side of a community who actually want to get involved.

I think there are two main types of social experiences players will converge to in RTS games. The first is playing team games where players are shuffled back and forth, but they stay in the same lobby and get to know each other by playing multiple games together.

The second is some kind of round robin style where not all the players are playing at once. Where there are a few players playing, maybe 1v1, maybe 2v2 or whatever, and there is friendly interaction between spectators, and when spectators hop in to play a match while others spectate, or maybe the loser or winner switches out. Or where the real purpose of a game is to show a new player the ropes.

In both cases, the lobby is the real beating heart of the RTS social scene, not so much a single monolithic global chat.

Blind matchmaking of the kind that Blizzard has implemented with Starcraft 2 has sort of created a third type of 'community interaction' of blind matchmaking of private parties against strangers. This creates a kind of insular team where it is 'your team against the world' which, in my opinion, is not good. Especially for solo play when it becomes the one player, isolated, against an impersonal ladder. Global chat doesn't really help Blizzard with SC2's 'lonely' play experience, and I doubt it would really make a difference for PA either.

Long story short, global chat might be a nice feature for some. But a robust lobby for repeat games with the same players is really going to be where players interact.

Might I just say that this poll doesn't really tell all that much. It's a 3 question poll and the number of people who vote yes will obviously outnumber the no, but we don't have any idea why based on the poll alone nor do we know what the yes people have in mind. Consider moving discussion to https://forums.uberent.com/threads/chat-systems.54197/.

Why not have both options? You know just like chats in MMOs?

Creating a system so then you can push the problems with it into a corner jut seems a little wrong to me.

But I like what Ledarsi has to say on the matter and feel like that would be a superior system to conventional chats.

Well if you are going to create a global chat, and then create a system where you block off the problem with tabs, you haven't really solved the problem.

Why not, JUST have the tabs.

Global chat is a good place to hang out and organize games with friends, or even a place to make friends if u can get past the trolls. We don't need multiple channels for different languages as i have never understood that and why in some games, they say speak only english. imo people can speak any language they want as long as it isn't offensive ;).

What speaks against a default tab that everyone joins when he starts the game (btw the chat should be outside of the game in a seperate application, see gpgnet & faf) where you can get to know other random people? It's not more work to implement and if you are that strictly against it you can just ignore or even close it.

from all I can see no TA/FA style game so far had big problems with idiots in the chat, so why should PA have problems?!

Polls can only be so in depth.

That's what the comments are for.
