Background stars are static even when the planet rotates?

Yes, this is only cosmetic. This has no impact for gameplay etc. So lets just call this note to self and devs and other interested ;-)

When a planet rotates around its own axis the background stars should move compared to that spin speed. This is especially relevant when your ingame cam is fixed on the battlefield and you see the stars in the background completely static. This is wrong. Dont get it? Well:

    1) Zoom out the ingame cam so you can see the whole planet and some stars in the background
    2) Do not move the cam
    3) Look at the stars in the background. They are not moving on your screen at all.
    4) This is impossible because your planet is rotating isnt it?

As I said, this has no gameplay impact, but it is seriousaly wrong when it comes to physics....you know "time and space"-stuff should hang togheter. It would add realism and a real 3D -feeling to the game to fix this.

The stars should move like described in the picture below since the planet rotates (even when your ingame cam is not moving):
    spin.jpg

Edit 23. nov 2013: In the first seconds of this video you can see an example on a cam that is fixed on the planet, and how the stars are moving in the background because the planet (our earth) is rotating: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ZxiWd21SXn0#t=13

Edit 25. nov 2013: Changed title from "Background stars should move when planet spins" because it was unnuanced + changes text to (try) explain better

I can see myself getting rather dizzy if that is made too distracting. Good idea, though.

We aren't talking high speed here though. So no dizzynes I guess.

Actually, I'm not sure it would be 'slow'(highly subjective term) and different people have very widely different levels of sensitivity to this. This is one of those things that could be game breaking for a subset of players, so we best tread carefully. I don't have hard numbers because I haven't had a chance to touch the game of late, but a 5 min day and a 30 degree FOV, it would take stars ~25 s for stars to cross the screen, I could see that causing a couple people problems, not most.

Do the stars move when you move the camera around the planet? Cuz that's the same issue only x1000 times faster

Just make it a graphics option and everyone is happy.

    Would be very cool.

After they finish the actual gameplay.

    Cool 3D effects!

But the ingame cam wil never be that far away (from the planets we are playing) that the background stars will be this 3d-ish compared to eachother. But cool effect anyway ;)

My point was rather that the stars behind the planet should move correct compared to the ingame camera and the planets we play on.

Example 1) If the ingame camera is fixed on a spot on the planet (which it is very much of the time) the stars should move in the background like this (though much slower ingame):
(this image is from a pretended geostationary sat which is the same as an ingame cam fixed on one spot, see specifically 13 seconds out in the video where the rotation speed is slower).

Example 2) Today (ingame situation pr 23 nov 2013) the background stars are standing still compared to the ingame cam even when the cam is fixed on a spot on the planet. This is not possible (and a breach of elementary physics etc). As seen in this video where the stars are not moving in the background then the camera must move itself (life a fly by). See this video as beeing a proof that you cannot have an ingame cam fixed on one spot on the planet if the stars in the background are standing (relatively) still.
The stars in the background are standing still, and it is impossible to have a fixed camview on the planet.

Aah I am bad at explaining, I think the video example 1) is the best way of explaining but I didnt find a slower rotation so I am afraid folks will be hanged up in the fast rotation speed. Anyone know about a video taken from a stationary geosatelite where you also can see the background stars moving at a slower speed? I think that is the best way to explain my point. And belive me, when you first understand the issue it seems pretty unrealistic if the stars does not move correct.

When you play Gran Turisimo, Forza Motorsport or Mario Cart, and you take a 180 turn on the road. Then it would be a bit disturbing if the bakground (mouintains) did not move at all wouldn't it ;-)

    Thats my point!

Ok, my english su¤&#. But I dont meen that the mountains (or the stars) actually move. I mean that they move relativily on screen compared to the gameplay cam and the planet you are playing on.

    Try this ingame:
    1) zoom out the cam so you can see both the battlefield and the stars in the background at the same time.
    2) Do not move the cam
    3) Look at the stars now. They are standing completely static (not moving on your screen)
    4) This is really strange because the planet is in fact rotating.

good topic. Now i finally know what felt wrong when zooming out and thinking "hm the planet rotates, but why doesnt it feel like it"? ;)

The stars in the background should not be a picture that doesn't move. But making it and 3d effect is not nessesay because the stars are to far away for that.

I agree, the stars do not need to move compared to each other (because like you say, they are very far away from the planet and the ingame cam). However the stars should move in the background compared to the planet.

Thank you. Im glad at least one person understood my point ;-)

seriously, such hardcore database of a mind, you have there.

and I was always of the opinion that the background was a placeholder
    It never changed once .

but we are nearing that time so let's hurry.
