It's my media server around my house.
I'm buying one of the 2 servers in the message above.
My main rig will be for gaming, one of the new servers i buy will be just hosting the game for multiplayer, not for gameplay.

Also what do you think of one of these as a dedicated sever round my house?
It's what im planning on upgrading the Marvel too.

    RECT™ TS-6432R8 <-- AMD 16 core 64 bit opteron
    or
    RECT™ TS-6482R8 <-- Intel Xeon E5-2600 (12 core per processor max)

Both are about $2k in price

    wow this is unexpected.

this means my machine is already more performant than one of your servers and I can hope to be a host for games later down the line.

@maxpowerz I don't really understand where you where going with this unix thing. both mac and linux have burried unix under piles and piles and piles of code that you wouldn't really want to forfeit. to the point now that it's become hard to see similarities between the two.

I think ubuntu would be a good choice for a PA server. I dunno I'm no expert.

I was only asking about unix to see if i could bring some fresh life into my old server tower.
But like garat said my server is DEC Alpha based and unless i have an x86 compatibility layer running it wont work.

oh I see. I'm sorry, I hate having to really give up on a machine :(

Same especially one so rare as my Marvel ES47 but it is way outdated and nothing supports DEC anymore.
So it seems im in for the inevitable upgrade.. lol.

In that case could you please explain to me what it is that is so special about high end server processors compared to home users high-end processors.

Is it that these particular processors allow the use of co-processors?

what exactly because it's very tempting to use a home user type tower as a server isn't it?

I always thought having dedicated server hardware was better for the task , but SXX and i talk and i think yes now home PC hardware just as effective as server tower hardware if not better.
we think now dedicated server hardware is moot/redundant unless you have specific task for it like a server farm or virtual server hosting.

If network bandwidth is the bottleneck even with our current gen rigs...

Then wouldn't this game just scream like a supercar in a LAN setup?

CPU is the bottleneck not network.
Your CPU will max out before the LAN connection.

Don't buy ready made servers build it up yourself and intel is faster at the moment.

The 2meg limit wouldn't apply to lan ( 1 gig both directions duplex cat7)

I have an IT rack Enclosure 1m square 1.2m tall holds 6 boards, powers them all and is cooled.
I was going to buy a few boards to jam in there for the buisness, but for the home server i was just going to buy a pre-made server for hosting PA and upgrading my media server and animation rendering.
I like the intel xeons, i was thinking of making it into a virtual server pool for rendering. maybe if i get enough inside info's from uber maybe even set up my own Uber-net style virtual server system where i can host many games one on each core.

I wont be at the workshop untill late this week, so here's a teaser of what hardware was sitting around the main living area, i couldn't be bothered pulling the marvel out of the roof (its a pain to climb up there just for a show off photo)
