Pole Lock ON is clearly more friendly to new players and avoids the total disorientation that having it off can cause. You only need to look at new players coming into the game, streams like those of Destiny, to see how much easier they find it to play the game with this setting on. It seems to me that ON is a much more logical default.
I would argue that the reorientation of the camera is essential to keeping new players on their toes about playing on a spherical object. This way they can be sure to expand and scout in all directions, giving them a constant new angle of view on their forces and base, allowing them to properly access the battlefield.
If the issues navigating the poles themselves could be improved upon, I would definitely say that the pole-lock is essential in avoiding disorientation, and it should be on by default.
I think having the pole lock on doesn't handicap anyone in playing, adjustments are of course still needed due to the spherical nature of the map, but having a clear up and down helps a lot in getting used to it.
How about they improve them first, and then decide whether it needs to be the default or not. Because as it is right now I really don't think pole lock needs to be a default setting due to it being a bit too clumsy.
Having pole lock off by default is, I think, like refusing to put training wheels on your kid's bike because you insist they learn to balance from day 1.
Haha but then you don't know if they are training wheels or maybe you just got your kid a slower bike.
A great many things are clumsy, as the game is still in beta. But yes, it is quite difficult currently to navigate the poles themselves because of this. I'd personally still rather go with it than the constant disorientation of changing angles and directions.
Colin's hotbuild has a toggle hotkey for turning polelock on and off while you play. Should be in the game. But yes I agree it should be on by default initially and is something you find and turn off once you've got a hang of the game.
If you're going to use an analogy, make it closer to the truth. It's like refusing to put training wheels on your kid's bike because the training wheels are damaged and constantly cause the bike to shake when driving over any type of bump.
the benefit from pole lock is far superior than the problems you have with it while playing at pole-region. Btw, ColaColin added a key to his key mod, where you can toggle pole lock with a single hotkey. This is very useful I think.
Make it a UI element instead of an obscure hotkey. The UI element would literally be a checkbox for "Pole Lock: On". You can still assign it to a hotkey but everyone knows the option is there.
I will go with Quitch on this one. Despite my personal feelings (and personally I toggle it back and forth lol), I realize it is both USUALLY the most friendliest to newbies AND USUALLY the most chosen option amongst players who tried out both. Also, because people keep coming in here making threads. People do that with everything about this game, in and of itself I could care less about people complaining. Why do I in this case? Because they keep coming in here complaining that the planet spins around IGNORANT OF THE EXISTANCE of a pole lock option. If it is on by default, newbies won't be in here making new complain threads every day, because they wont be able to find it but it will be on by default.
How about making the CapsLock key toggle pole lock on an off during a game...that way it becomes a non issue. Just toggle it off when crossing a pole.
Yes, that's much better than the normal RTS'es that force me to only attack towards north.. wait, what?
Bette then RTS games that have you attack on one direction because you are in a sand box. Which was my point.
