New Payment Provider

Qiwi started as a Russian payment provider that relies on both digital wallets and kiosks. It's starting to expand, but it's still mostly in Russia and eastern Europe.

No relation to Kiwi, which would imply New Zealand.

That would seem like a rather specialized payment service, if all you could buy with it are kiwi fruit. Funny, though.

Fun fact: Kiwifruit originates from China, not New Zealand, and were renamed from "Chinese gooseberry" to assuage fears of US consumer rejection during the Cold War.

Oddly enough, we still call them Chinese Gooseberries. Quite often.


They are supposedly called Kiwifruit because they kind of resemble the Kiwi. You know. The brown, hairy bird. Not the people.

That's interesting about the kiwis.. orange fruit were originally called chinese apples I guess.. hence the name Sinaasappel in dutch, Apfelsin in german, etc. Also, the latin name is citrus sinensis.
