the tactical overlay would, you would want to be able to see units at all times, anything visually obscuring/impairing units view is a fail.
My point was that it would be integrated into part of the surface terrain. So instead of a mountain with all various shades of brown, we have a 1 pixel thin line interrupting the surface texture. Minimal graphics rendering, but it gets the job done. This is my horrible, horrible, I-have-no-photoshop-skills-mock-up. The scale IS WAY, WAY OFF, but I hope you get the idea.... Doesn't have to be fancy, but nice, slim and very unintrusive. The grids would be much, much better in the real game.
