If it's known what system is used explicitly, then yes, less clicks is more efficient. I agree with cola_colin and kingjohnvi that I'm not too bothered about either being used as long as it's known what is being used.

My point was at this stage it's up to our assumptions on how it works, and both ways have a certain logic behind them. Of course if the game did use the "old system" then I'd have had to use a lot more clicks to figure out why my units were acting contrary to what I set their orders to be, because I never would assume a "current location" status would be converted into a patrol order without my input.

Really I just wanted to point out that converting a "current location" status into a patrol point automatically isn't as logical as some may think. That in fact it might seem like your units were acting contrary to orders you set, which is not a good thing in a strategy game. If it's clearly stated (and I do hope a tutorial is added when the game actually releases to ensure little things like this don't become issues) then I'm good with whatever.

chill out, that's not what I said, anyways I've tried and compared both.
please try forged alliance. after playing it for a couple hours having used patrol on purpose alot, you may, even if you still believe two order-patrol is better, not think so poorly of one order-patrol.

if i need to issue a patrol, i ususaly just send a unit via shift-click where it should start anyway, then set the patrol route, like a circle around my base (aircraft esp.) or in a line at a chokepoint or something like that.
    so...

select unit, send it to a startpositon, and then issue patrol-move- orders via follow up shift-clicks.

sidenote, i still think the lines and waypoints needs to be bigger, but that has been said like a thousand times allready.

    Assuming:
Mouse is already hovering over New Location #1
Including unit selection as 1 action
    Using 'p' as a hotkey and = 1 action:
Assuming holding shift = 1 action
Assuming shift is held throughout where necessary, not released

    'New' way
    1. 7 actions
    2. 7 actions

    'Old' way
    1. 3 actions
    2. 7 actions

But, for what it's worth, I find that the starting location is rarely, if ever, where I want one of my patrol markers to be, so I dispute the usefulness of that statistic :p

that's exactly the point, we purposfully set the first movement at patrol point, it' a habbit we've taken from supcom playing, and trust me it's just soooo instinctive.

you don't have precious seconds to waste fumbling about your orders, they have to be the most efficient they can.

    otherwise why bother whith hotkeys?

I don't need to trust you, I know how instinctive it is! :p

I just prefer the logic of the new system, and while I and many other who are used to the TA system will struggle to kick the habit, I hope they stick with this one, as it just makes more sense to me, and I would assume new players would find this easier to comprehend, rather than having to figure out that you have to first issue a move order that is then converted into a patrol order :)

I find it doesn't make more sence and it think it should definately be put up for vote because clearly there is no consensus.

Guys, let's not get ahead of ourselves...

Maybe this all gets solved by area commands and the ability to draw on the map.

EDIT : I still want to be able to issue specific patrol using the better of the two methods

You literally told me what I think wasn't what I'd think then told me I had "no idea." I certainly can't think of any other way to read your reply and from your further messages you clearly think your way is the right way and people thinking any other way is wrong. As I said after, I'm cool with whatever ends up being in, but it needs to be clear because I assumed it worked the way it is currently implemented in this game.

And here you've clearly pointed out why it makes sense TO YOU. It's instinctive because you've used it a lot before. I've already explained how it is the OPPOSITE of instinctive to me, and some others clearly agree.

Now what was this thread about? Someone expecting the patrol to work in a different way to the current implementation. It's clear that the way they expect isn't necessarily that intuitive. How can we fix this? Whatever method used must be explained to new players. I mean that was the actual catalyst of this thread so really that's the issue isn't it? I mean I'm personally fine with Uber deciding what they think is best, and indeed maybe area commands will make this entire discussion obsolete :p

Edit: "There is a new tutorial video off the main menu now. This is WIP, and will be replaced/enhanced with a selection of tutorial videos/community how-to guides going into the future." <- Sweet

So I just played a game and realized why I really like the current patrol system. Often when I want to co-ordinate an attack I want large amounts of units to meet up near the enemie's base and I'll often set them to patrol a small area so they do't just sit in a blob nearby the enemy. Of course since they can be coming from lots of random places around the globe it'd completely screw up their patrol route if they all included their various random waypoints in said route.

^^^ You could still do this with the old method by issuing a move order to location, then a patrol order from there.

As for what is better, I don't find myself having an opinion, both work fine.

Although then it's more clicks for that as far as the "less clicks" argument goes. I realized last night that for my playstyle the current system is more suitable, because often I will have groups of units doing something and then I want them to consolidate into a patrol route. I see to do it more often than setting patrol routes from factories or for units which are just sitting in a blob (which I always try and avoid).

Gonna have to check out what they put in the tutorial soon. Didn't have much time to play last night so didn't wanna spend any of it watching the little vid :p
