for the past few days I've tried getting on and playing. I can create a custom game but then it crashes on loading the planet renderings. It sometimes crashes right before I can even set up my drop point.

If it's give you drivers to install just use them. If it's say that your hardware isn't compatible you need do that: Backup important information from laptop. Usually generic drivers don't cause any problems, but I'm recommend back backups anyway. Download and install "Latest Beta Driver" from same page. If any error occur in process of installation then try to remove old version of Catalyst and run installer again.
