Hey guys Our german RTS community had the chance to do an english 1 hour audio podcast with the RTS guru himself - Chris Taylor - about his career, his games and his current plans. You all know he was pretty down after his wildman campaign, but in our podcast he seems to be full of life and joy again - he has something cooking for sure. That's why we asked him if he is currently developing Total Annihilation 2. While he does not directly answer that question, he gives pretty obvious metaphors... You should listen to the podcast yourself to read between his lines and decide yourself what he's up to. Our guess is, that he is indeed developing TA2 Oh and if you are not interested in TA2 - don't worry, the podcast has enough interesting content, for example how game development worked back in the '90 or what he thinks about the current state of the games industry. He also talks about the mistakes he did in the past - like SupCom 2 . If you are still not interested, at least listen to it for Chris' hilarious jokes . Well or if you want to hear our fellow forum Mod Cola_Colin talk, he also is on the podcast. We provide an english summary of all the topics that were talked about here. And for all german speaking people, the same summary is also available in german. Interesting sidenote: In one of our recent Alpha key raffles we asked if players would prefer PA or TA2 (or if they don't know), and surprisingly 81% voted for PA So what do you think about that?
I'm believe there will be different answer on TA source code release one day, thanks for asking him anyway!
I think there's plenty of room for a TA2, as I'm sure it would play differently from PA, and variety is always welcome in gaming. But how TA2 is developed (if it is developed) is my main concern. First an foremost, will it follow similar principles to PA, like supporting Linux and lack of DRM (including Steam)? Also, will it follow the regular release model of TA rather than the f2p model of AoEO? If the answer to any of these is no, then I'm not interested. But otherwise, I'll be happy for the variety in the genre.
actually it should work, I just tested it. Is it still not working for you? If so, why exactly? I'm also sceptical. He somehow contradicts himself because he talks so much about innovation and new gameplay, that does not come together with a true sequel. Also there's the question how much the pay2win err free2play stuff from wargaming will influence the whole game. I don't think that free2play for that kind of game would work.
Unfortunately, ct is not that kind of game creator. He will surely want to give his vision of what the next step in rts gaming will be. Now being backed by war gaming the funds are present to create something maybe even bigger and badder than pa...
You know, back in the old days, a sequel usually meant new gameplay and innovation on top of an existing ip.
If they released "TA2" with everything exactly the same except improved graphics and max unit capabilities.. I'd buy and play it lol. I'd still play PA as well.
I wouldn't mind Uber doing a more traditional rts/mod as well as PA using the same technology (like the map style - non spherical). Want to play on a rectangle map like FA? Go ahead! Just my humble opinion. I think the sphere is definitely more challenging and would be very good for teamwork with skype or other voice communication.
I'm curious to see what ct has in mind for ta2. I think it's awesome to be getting both pa and a true ta sequel! Rts gaming had been dead since fa for me lol hope he sticks with fa as a model to
