The Windows version of PA actually has some DirectX dependencies despite the fact that it uses OpenGL to actually render the game. Try installing the latest DirectX 9 runtime on your box as Windows 8 does not come with DirectX 9 pre installed.

Yes I know that the newer versions of DirectX that come with Windows 7/8 are "compatible" but it seems that PA expects a specific older version of the dx9 dll. I have seen other games do this too on my Windows 7 system. Although usually older games.

You tried to do that with web installer? It's not working correctly.

Download this package (directx_Jun2010_redist.exe), unpack it, and then run DXSETUP.exe:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... px?id=8109

If it not helps you may try to unpack Jun2010_d3dx9_43_x64.cab yourself and place *.dll files in same directory with PA.exe or in "host" directory where CoherentUI_Host.exe
But probably you need Jun2010_d3dx9_43_x86.cab because it's UI need this DLL and I don't sure if latest Windows builds need 32-bit DLL's or 64-bit.

It is compatible, unfortunately Windows have some weird bugs related to DirectX9 web installer. It's not PA bug, so developers can't fix it.

Anyone have any details as to the "weird bugs" on Windows 8 ?

Read again please, I'm not talk about bugs of Windows 8. I said about bugs of DirectX installer.

But it's also looks like some Windows 8 installations have wrong d3d9x_43.dll file in system, it's create some problems.

Are you working at Microsoft? :)

Biggest bug in DirectX installer: it's not checking file checksums. E.g if you have broken DLL it's won't replace it with correct version. Also if you have DLL which isn't registered in system it's won't remove it and it's won't try to register it.

So if you want to get proper DLLs you need remove them and then install them from June 2010 redist.
