Ok im running a lot of stardock crap too, like Deskscapes, ModernMix, Decor8, Start8. I know they are hooked into windows but could they maybe be affecting things?
ok failing on that driver, i have even tried extracting the driver and forcing the install through device manager, Searched the .inf and tried the pick driver manually/have disk approach and still failed

I'm have some interesting idea. Can you try to download and install VGA driver for W701 from Acer website? This one also have HD4000 graphics, probably it's will be installed without problems. It's not latest one, but at least it from 2013. At least we can try that before anything else.
i will try the w701 driver now, i just had to get my kids ready for school. If this driver fails i will try a vanilla/fresh os install, I think Deskscapes, and leftover files from WindowFX are affecting my system. I just tried playing a different game and my joystick now is not mapping keyboard to buttons and axis's. i think stardock softwares are very cool but make systems like mine unstable.
It's will be even better if you make really fresh Windows install, e.g not from Acer restore disk or so. This message you get about incompatible drivers are software and forced by Acer, so it's won't be like that on fresh Win8 installation.

Congrats! Seems like you met standard Intel HD bug with color correction: FS#2001 There you can find my instruction how you can partially bypass the problem using color profiles.
The Acer W700 slate pc is impressive and its gaming capabilities have done nothing but surprise me Dead island 1 + 2 both run fine in HD and so does Lost Palnet 2 in DX11 mode, Acer support suck d balls tho (my bad i knew this already but eh i got this as a free upgrade so im not complaining ... lol) It was a free upgrade from 2 defective Asus Vivo Tab W8 returns to local retailer. They felt bad and gave me this device instead as it was best on the shelf at the time.
There is nothing special to Acer, there is tons of devices which have Intel graphics and it's work the same on all of them. Any other slate PC with Intel HD4000 will have exactly same performance. But some manufacturers are crap who block users from installing of generic drivers and then don't even click on checkbox to give you driver update. There is no differences between those devices, but they're too lazy to just post proper link in driver downloads.
