    Greetings Players!

I currently use a GTX 460, and it has done well for me since SupCom came out. My CPU is a 6-core AMD FX6300. 8GB of ram.

anyway, i get slowdown in the game after it plays for a few minutes, and the GPU monitor widget on my other screen shows the GPU is pegged, or close to it.

What can i adjust? Or is this (like the litecoin mining) a reason to migrate to a Radeon GPU?
    I was considering a 7790.

Same issues with a GTX 560. We old. This game requires more hoss pow-a. Not that my FX-74 rig isn't to blame. But it plays Borderlands 2 and Space Marine just fine. So... something about the GPU is not happy.

There is still a lot of optimization to be done (and actually possible). Not being able to play it fluent for now, does not mean that you are not going to be able to play it fluently in later versions.

Bear in mind that this is still Alpha where features get completed in the first place, optimization and finetuning will happen in Beta.

A 460 or 560 isn't fast when compared to modern GPUs, but it's still quite strong and should/will be able to meet the minimum requirements.

When you are playing the Steam version of PA: Please deactivate Steam overlay. The Nvidia driver doesn't like having to deal with Overlay and PA at the same time, even when the overlay is not active.

Well, its good to know I would meet the minimums. So I dont need to rush into an upgrade. But.........
Back in the day, I built a new computer for Supreme Commander. So over the next few months I will be looking for recommendations on upgrading my GPU.

Having gone and looked at the charts, I think the 7850 is my initial target.

This may also be related to the development process, but my 8GB of RAM (which idles at ~30%) hits 90% utilization while running PA. Oddly, the 6 cores do not max out at all.

I have to say that you might wanna wait a short while. AMD is going to release their new graphic cards this year (in october i think it was). That means for the same price you can get a better card (or getting a cheaper card that is as powerfull as the 7850). Also keep a eye on nvidia because neither of them likes the other being on the 'best gpu' throne.

From what i have noticed PA uses 1 core. Dont look at your total cpu usage because with 6 cores it may mean 1 core is 100% stressed and it will only show 17% usage and it will slow down your game. There are not many games that use 6 cores and even if they do it its often not that efficient (lots of overhead stuff etc.).

I have a i5 760 (is about half the speed of a i5 4670 in benchmarks) and a hd7970 and my cpu is a really big bottleneck in this game. For me setting the graphic settings to uber makes no difference and even looks like i get more fps than on lowest. So iam planning to upgrade to broadwell when it comes out (I hope intel puts sata express, ddr4 and pcie4.0 in that cpu).

Game client isn't CPU-intensive because everything calculated on server. Only planet generation on start of game is CPU-intensive and it's have proper multithreading.

You don't need to upgrade CPU for this game because it's don't need powerful CPU. It's only might be used if you planned to run server (or just single player games with lot of AIs) on this hardware. Your problem with performance most likely related to some AMD-specifics or game bugs, IMHO.

And actually there isn't much difference between old and newer Intel CPU, at least if you don't want to buy some $350 model like i7 4770K.

I have the game and i can tell you my cpu is a big bottleneck. My friend got a i5 3570 and its way smoother.

Also for gaming you dont use i7 unless you want to waste money. i7 just means it has hyperthreading.

There is only bottleneck with CPU which related to how PA handle UI refresh and it's there on any CPU (even on mine). It's game problem which need to be fixed by devs. Otherwise PA client is only viewer and you don't need to upgrade CPU to run it.

I just want to say that upgrading CPU only to bypass game bug is pointless.

    What GPU your friend have?

HT give many advances for apps with proper multithreading and PA is one of them. If you ever plan to run PA server I'm totally sure you'll get best performance with HT. At least planet generator is faster with HT than without HT.

I doubt there's many stuff that gamers use that can benefit from 8 threads. At most HT is ~30% faster than no HT if it fully utilises all threads. You are paying 50% more for at most 30% performance improvement in very limited situations. You are much better of sticking to i5 if you are just gaming.

However for stuff like CAD (renders for instance), photoshop etc. i can see a benefit for this. The planet generator probably benefits from it too. But the game itself? I doubt that. Only if you are running a server.

simulationg projectiles, calculating barrel angle for thousands upon thousands upon thousands of units... Yeah I think that fits the bill for a use for multiple threads.

If you don't want those 30% performance you'd better stick to AMD CPUs. They're cheaper and you don't need to upgrade motherboards with new sockets every year. Also you don't pay extra for integrated graphics you'll never use.

If you plan to play offline after release server will be runned on your machine. ;)

I can assure you that we're working really hard on CPU and GPU issues. It's definitely something that's in the front of our minds.

Mind you PA on low quality right now is as to your average gamer's rig as SupCom was on the highest quality to your average gamer's rig at release.

PA simply pushes more boundaries graphics-wise. Spheres inherently require more polygons than a heightmap with props splatted onto it, and PA has multiple spheres with more higher-poly props, as well as the messiness of Boolean operations. I'm not sure what algorithms Uber uses for Booleans, it might be in-house, it might be one of the open source algorithms (I hear polylib did it pretty well), but either way Booleans tend to be messy.

People keep saying "Oh, polycount is kinda arbitrary," except it isn't when your talking about 5 million polygons vs. 50 million polygons.

That is if PA will use multiple cores for that. So far i only see it using 1 core. For me there is also pretty much no difference between lowest and uber. Thats because my gpu (hd7970) isnt the bottleneck in my system for this game. Its my cpu.
Idk how this will be in the future but as it currenly stands you need a cpu with good single threaded performance and i5 does exactly that. But i highly doubt you would see a noticable performance gain from HT in the future unless you are generating stuff or running a server.

Also i dont think you want to upgrade your cpu each year if you are saving money. Back in 2000 this was viable but now with only marginal improvements you can use the same cpu for a couple of generations. Sure intel changes sockets each year but to me that doesnt matter since by the time its finally worth getting a cpu upgrade you have to replace your motherboard anyway. Intel also pwns amd hard with their single threaded performance. At lower budgets however amd tends to win. Especially APU's pwns intels integrated graphics.

I think the devs can shine more light on this.

There no much difference for anyone. No mater what CPU and GPU you have you'll get some lag anyway because high CPU usage seems to me like game problem and it's seems to be related to UI.

Yes you can upgrade it if you like to, but it's something Uber need to deal with in first place.

What you might not read between the lines here @rick is "the game is unoptimised, it's current funcionality is not representative of the one it will have on release day".
On that day PA will run dantastic on your hardware.

I do realise that. Prolly missed this sentence: Idk how this will be in the future but as it currenly stands you need a cpu with good single threaded performance and i5 does exactly that.

At most the i7 4770k would be 30% faster in multithreaded stuff than the i5 4670k. But thats assuming the following things:
    -Game uses 8 threads
-No overhead costs (2 cores often arent 2x faster than 1 core)
-All threads get fully utilised (not 1 thread running at 100% and next thread at 20%!).

Likely the real speed gain of a i7 vs i5 would be much lower than 30%. Now keep in mind i5 4670k is ~200 euro's and i7 4770k is ~300 euro's. Thats quite a difference.

It's a nonsense to optimize an alpha product, when a lot of things changes over day.
Optimization is a late process, at late beta, and can improve a lot the performance.

Iam just telling you dont expect a 30% increase in performance with HT even when the game is optimized for it.

Never said alpha should be optimized. Where did you get that from?
