For most combat units, their role consists of "find things to shoot and then shoot them". The bulk of the work is AI related, a matter of picking the right enemies and not wasting too many shots.

For workers, it's a slightly different story. They have at least 3 major tasks on the open field and it can be difficult to get the one you want. This is most prominently seen in Supcom2 when using engineers. Attempting to escort an army for repair duty is nearly impossible, as they will prefer to fall behind doing slow reclaim. Attempting to attack enemies is similarly difficult; the Cybran engineer in particular gets downgraded when it uses its weapon to deal damage instead of the lathe. In PA patrolling engineers can devastate your economy as they tank your energy at an absurd rate.

One option is to include units that specifically perform the desired tasks. In particular a flying repair craft and a high speed dedicated reclaim scout would both work very well as support units in the army. They sport lower cost, better mobility, better conflict, and don't create fears of wrecking your economy. Also, don't give weapons to lathe units. It's stupid as ****, the lathe is already a fully capable nanobot weapon.

Another option is to have toggles for engineering functions. Choosing their behavior is a simple matter of turning AI recycle/repair/build on or off. Players are not stopped from forcing these orders if they desire, but the engis will not go out of their way to perform the tasks they aren't allowed.

yes excactly right, because you botched it completely, I guess I could say you've got the right idea, just don't think you can get it right the very first time you try it. and that's exactly the impression you give off. the reading betweens the lines you give us is not worth a damn, you need much practice and pacience.

Sorry, what is "it" that I botched exactly?
That's kinda my whole point. Ideas are getting shot down with high level excuses without explaining the underlying reasoning which prevents the process of developing ideas past their 1st stage...
Sorry? I'm honest and demand the same of others because without that nothing constrictive can come from communicating. I continue to engage in constrictive criticism and encourage the same and that demonstrates my "pacience" but man, English isn't your 1st language eh? try using http://translate.google.com/, it might not only help you fix those excessive commas and spelling mistakes but also reading comprehension for yourself both in reading and writing posts. Tone, on the other hand, will always be subjective to the reader...

The excessive "sorry"s and "eh" didn't tip you off that I'm Canadian eh? :p In all seriousness it was obvious to me that it's not your 1st language from only a couple of your posts so I was trying to nicely prompt you to put more care into your communication (reading and writing) so people can better understand you and visa-versa (the other way around).

If there isn't time for it for launch I really don't have time to sit around considering it's merits. It's really that simple.
