Planetary and orbital trajectories : only x & y axes ?

    In the editor i have noticed we can only play with x/y axes. Is this a current limitation ? is z axe supposed to be included later ?

    I think there was answer in Backers Lounge, if I'm correct there is "Z" axis, but it's won't be present in gameplay because it's make it too complicated.

    I'm personally agree with that, but I want to believe we'll have access to Z axis in mods and also I want planets rotate on its own axis. :)

    Thanks :) A bit sad it won't be available in gameplay :( And i also want planets to rotate on their own axe :p

    But it's understandable, it's pretty hard to control 3D space on 2D screen. It's just won't work for RTS.

    SXX has it right. A Z axis would be nice, but it adds incredible complexity to the control and usability of a solar system. It's not something we want to try and tackle right now, but it's one of the reasons we have support for it, because we might like to in the future.

    I definitly trust both of you. And even if i can remember that homeworld was playable in 3D, there were not that much units and it did not require the same reactivity.

    In that case, bases will be immune to asteroid crashes at the poles. And i don't think it is bad, it would give a meaning to where you would build your main base on a planet in a multi-planet game.

    Why you think this way? I totally sure some things like asteroid attacks might work in 2.5D/3D, they just will looks more flat in solar system view.

    Exactly, just because orbits are calculated in 2D doesn't mean the asteroid has to impact in that 2D plane, afterall the gamespace is still 3D....

    Fun > realism

    As long as I understand game might calculate everything in 3D, but with same Z axis. :)

    We already have looping nukes, I don't see any reason why asteroid can't just move a bit less realistically.

    Yes, I presume everything in the solar system is all 3d, just the planets don't move up and down in the Z dimension, only in X and Y. So when you launch an asteroid at a pole then the trajectory for that asteroid is no longer being decided by the physics and is instead just a set curved path to the pole and can move in the Z dimension.

    Really not that hard to imagine, don't understand why a lot of people are having a hissy fit over realistic orbits and 2D orbits and all that ****.

    Goes to show what a crappy floating satellite can do to really fire peoples indignation meters up!
