I got a question about custom PC building

(Obligatory comment about me not being active here for a million billion years)

Anyway yeah I have a general question about PC building, and it's surprisingly not hardware related!

The basic question is, Windows 8.1 or 10?
I've gotten pretty used to Windows 8.1 over the years, really the only reason I'm considering 10 is because Halo Wars 2 will only be available on the Windows 10 store, but if Windows 10 is as shitty as I hear I don't think I'll be getting it. So... is it?
Basically all I care about is that it's stable enough to not crash, and won't cause any horrible compatibility issues with some of my older games.
No I don't want Linux.

If you're happy with Windows 8.1 i don't see any benefits. I've been using 10 for a while now and i still don't see the upgrade from 7. Well, other than the spyware i disabled with a program.

If you are a gamer windows 10 is a must. The main reason being dx12 is windows 10 exclusive. At the moment all games coming out have both dx11 and dx12 however it's only a matter of time before dx12 only titles are the norm.

On a usage side, personally I find windows 10 very usable.

i'd say windows 10 for the better drivers but judging by your unwillingness to use linux i'd say you're a new user and less susceptible to knowing how to correctly fend off microsoft spying so win 8.1

If it's a new build might as well go with Win10.

Just wait 5 years for the Windows Store to be not complete and utter shite and then it'll even be ok.

The PC would actually be finished by now, but I somehow completely forgot to get a disc drive which is just phenomenal.

You're gonna use it like twice a year.

Out of curiosity, what are the specs of your new machine?

that you'd want a disk drive is even more phenomenal to me.

all disk drivers are always outdated compared to their online ones.

for what?

you could have gotten those old ones on the hard drive ages ago and the new ones you get can all be purchased and downloaded. even physical purchases come with virtual versions you also own and get to pick off the net.

well then call yourself lucky because it not only prides itself in championing all of CD's data-loss aptitudes but multiplying them tenfold and adding new ones to the pile.

Well I think out of my whole collection I might have a single audio cd. The most value is in anime dvds, followed by games on cd-roms and dvd-roms.

why don't you make these permanently accessible to yourself at faster speeds and even simultaneously by putting them on hard drives?
