So this was the second time today that PA:T Froze, resulting in my system becoming completely unresponsive and eventually locking up, forcing me to hard reboot. The first time it happened I was playing a game offline and for no apparent reason, the game froze and my harddrive starting having a fit. I tried to alt+f4, Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-Tab, and Ctrl-Shift-Escape but to no avail. I had no mods installed. The second I had PA-Stats installed. Again I was playing against the AI and just as I blew up the last commander with a Manhattan bomb, the game froze up. The enemy commander didn't even get to explode, as soon as the shockwave hit em (he was underwater and out of vision) the game locked up. I had a Twitch stream on my second monitor and it continued to play for about 10 seconds, then the sound started glitching out like it was distorted in slow motion a couple times, then got stuck that way at which point I hard reset again. A couple seconds after the game freeze my harddrive light came on again and stayed on till the reboot. I'm concerned that I may end up causing damage to the hard drive if I keep having to reset it while it's read/writing, or cause corruption on the drive. Previous to these last two bad freezes, I had a few random crashes where I had to Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Lock/Logout screen then Alt-T to get to task manager because neither Alt-Tab nor Ctrl-Shift-Esc would work. You could tell that windows was switching to other programs I had open because PA would kinda gray out like normal, but no other window would show. Logs attached.
This has all the hallmarks of running out of memory. How much RAM do you have and what's the amount of virtual memory you have set? If you don't know the latter, you can also post a DxDiag.txt which will contain that info. You can make one by pressing <WinKey>+R, typing "dxdiag", and pressing "Save All Information...".
I have 16 gigs of ram and a 29 gig page file. Most I've ever seen in use was in vanilla PA playing in a system with a bunch of planets, and that topped out at 12-13 gigs. I'm going to keep task manager up on my second screen so if it happens again I should be able to see if the ram usage goes through the roof.
Yeah, good idea. Some people have stumbled upon a memory leak. In that case it wouldn't matter how much you have, it will fill up eventually. You'd most definitely notice that if you have the task manager open.
So I caught it this time. I almost ended the process but decided to watch the ram usage to see what would happen. Ram usage increased by about 2 gig a sec until it reached 9.8g'ish and then my system hard locked with the hard drive going crazy. I wasn't looking at the pagefile so not sure if it's usage was spiking as well. Game crashed on a zoom out but not far enough to see space. No mods installed.
Can you try the latest PTE? See http://exodusesports.com/guides/exodus-explains-planetary-annihilation-pte/ for instructions on how to get that. It may have been fixed. The PTE is the version for the next update. So if it's fixed in the PTE, it will be fixed in the next stable update.
