Oh yeah nothing against Linux (i dual boot)... Just think people are a bit quick to ridicule Microsoft's os, as it most definitely has its uses.

:( i think that's really missrepresentative, you should go surf the interwebz a bit you'll see it's quite the opposite.

people have an unreal amount of unwarrented prejudice bordering on hate around linux. and fanboy the hell out of windows.

Make sure you do a regular upgrade before you do a clean install. I've heard you can end up without a Win 10 key if you don't.

Or at least, getting one becomes a lot more involved.

Iso is to burn onto a disc to install on a currently non-functioning comp where locating the product key should be possible.

You get a new key when you upgrade, you can't use an old one.

    Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

PC was upgraded from XP-> ~ two years ago, so the product key for the eight is probably in an email.

    So yeah, you're misunderstanding me.

No I'm downloading the win 10 iso to upgrade a currently borked computer with win 10 TP installed that once had Win 8 installed after an XP install on it became borked, but had the 8 replaced with a 10 TP install after it became borked, which was replaced with another TP install after that install became borked, which was replaced by another TP install after that install became borked, with the new install becoming instaborked.

    ...

I thought I read that the Win10 iso could only be used for clean installs and not upgrades. Clean installs wipe license data, and Win8 keys can't be used for Win10 installs.

If they can be used for just upgrades then yes, I've been misunderstanding.

I feel bad for MS's tech support these next few weeks...

Nah you can upgrade from Windows 7 and 8 iirc, but I doubt you can from the technical preview.

If you guys are trying to update, don't.

If there were an alternative to windows, i'd probably use it. but there isn't. Gaming isn't even half supported on Linux or Mac. I'm not gonna pay ~200 euros extra just to own a mac. I'm not going to read a manual to deal with Linux. Im not going to read a lengthy explanation of the various incarnations of linux.

Linux and Mac may be great for some people with some setup in where it works, but for me, windows is the only OS that does what i need it to do. And quite frankly, that sucks, because there's no real choice (aside from aforementioned exceptions).

Also, do Windows fanboys even exist? I'm pretty sure Windows is the no.1 used OS because it's not really a choice?

What's wrong with Windows? According to you it is the "OS that does what [you] need it to do".

And gaming is supported on Mac and Linux, isn't it? (See PA). It's just that a number of game studios choose to target Windows only, which makes sense economically due to the large amount of Windows users out there.

And, yes, there are fans for almost everything. :)
(I mean, the Hololens stuff is pretty cool)

all of that is wrong. Like literally all.

first off : windows is NOT the most used os. Not if you are refraining from excluding every server and phone.

second linux is NOT something that only half supports gaming. Not by a long shot. you are on the forum of a game with a native linux build. most of the most popular steam games also run native on linux.

    next

linux is NOT something that requires more manuals or instructions to use.

Many will claim they always had the knowledge to use windows. This is false of course. you did not come out of the womb knowing how to use windows. And had you had to try using both linux and windows simultaneously, you would have learned linux faster. It was a long hard road that you unfortunately do not remember that taught you to be a moderate windows user. and you still learn everyday.

Having to relearn using a computer puts you in a situation of discomfort you feel you rather avoid by sticking to what you know now.

this does NOT equate to linux being harder.

Linux has logic by it's side which gives it an edge in terms of understandability.

most of the time, vehement keyboard heroes attack any opposition to an idea they choose because of how popular it is (in a sheepish manner).

contrary to what one would believe. Ideas that don't need defending are the ones that get defended. pairs of balls are rare on the internet.

and documenting onself much much rarer. It's often you'll see this phenomenon in conjunction with a myth. (take sharks as an example, I've dived with several sorts yet people still see them as the thing to be most feared on this earth).

You're the one skewing statistics. Are we talking about phones or servers in this thread? No.
Windows is by far the most used desktop OS. Mobile OS's don't count when you're talking about what to put on your desktop, same for servers.

I stopped using Linux because almost none of the games I wanted to play ran well on it besides PA.

From my experience gaming wasn't half supported. And in order to get the almost half I had to swim through a new online guide almost every time. Getting native windows programs to work in Linux is a bitch.

I just ran a steam search of all games vs linux/steamOS games. SteamOS + Linux got 109 pages of hits. A regular global search got over 500. Even if you subtracted every Linux game from the global results on the assumption that they don't work in Windows, Windows would still have over double the games.

I like Linux for certain things, but you're fanboying hard.

Not being sarcastic, I really didn't see this thread as something that would explode into a debate as to which OS is the best. It actually caught me off guard. Maybe start another thread for that. Let's keep going with windows 10 right now.

I don't think it's possible to talk about an OS without people starting a pissing contest. Kind of like how you can't talk about a new console without somebody talking about why it won't be as good as its competition.

But to get things back on topic. I'm going to have to test out my japanese games on Win10. They'll probably still require me to change my locale to get them to work. I'll be pissed if they don't work.
