I have this problem where PA almost stops entirely when I press down the shift key.

The game runs with 70-100 FPS and my CPU is at 30% load. When I then hold the Shift key, it drops to 1-10 FPS and may stop completely till I release the key.

    CPU: Intel i7-2600K 3.4 GHz
    GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 970
Ram: Kingston Hyper X Beast 16 GB, 2400 MHz
    Windows 7 Home Premium

Your system looks fine to me. Have you checked the link that I posted yet?

Also, did you have any programs running in the background besides the game?

I had nothing from that list. I usually have steam running in the background.
I have tried fixing the files with steam verification and redownloading the game.

Well, since you have Steam running in the background, is the Steam Overlay disabled?

Is there any delay after you start holding the shift key before the slowdown happens? If the delay is about a second, then it doesn't happen until key-repeat events start coming in.

Are you using only 'shift' on the keyboard, pressing and releasing shift (multiple times during unit queueing) and doing all other input from the mouse? May be a combination of toggling accessibility features in Windows too.

Also, is the delay consistent? Or does it scale with the amount of build orders you have. I ask because the white wire-frames that appear when you hold <Shift> can actually be quite a burden on the computer. You can try giving a planet wide build order for energy storage. If you press <Shift> to make the wire-frames visible, do you get a really massive lag spike then? And if you press <Shift> while having just one tiny AA gun in the build queue, do you still get a lag spike?

    Steam overlay is still active.

I press the shift button now and then, but not multiple times after eachother.

There is a delay from when I press the button and it slows down really fast.

The delay scales slightly with the amount of build orders. My computer handled it easily a few months ago.

Thanks for the help guys. But I think I will format my PC soon and check then if it fixes it.
Im not going to play for a few months now anyways. I Will let you know if it fixes it :)
