.... wonder how many may refund after this ....
speaking of refunds ... i wonder if the new refundpolicy from steam did hit uber in any negative way at all or if the refundrate so far was just marginal ...

As a new member, I have to say, the very first experience of the game was rather short.
Fired up a SP game, and selected my first research stuff (sorry for the terminology, I am still new to this), and I happen to scout a planet that had a enemy on it, and I hit "fight" and what happens?
Says can't reach server, and drops me back to the main menu.
    WTH?
How can this be played in offline mode?

There was a reason why Supreme Commander and the rest of them were popular, they had working SP modes with no need for external crap.
Now, after reading they finally have a Single player mode, that happens?
    Ugh.

Might just have to do the refund, if I can't figure out how to play the game in offline mode. :(

Go into settings, server, and change local server to ON.

Quitch's answer is correct, but to add, we have a server no matter what. The only difference is in offline server mode, the server is your computer, in online server mode, it is ours.

Feel free to contact support@uberent.com if you have issues and they can help you get it worked out :)

Watch the Human Resources Kickstarter video where John Comes talks about how they DELIVERED on the Planetary Annihilation kickstarter, watch from the 5:35 mark...
John Comes says "And we have delivered on it".

Sorry John but your definition of delivered is obviously very different from everyone else's. So where's the Planetary Documentary? Not that I really care about the documentary, I would rather the money, time and effort for the documentary was pumped back into funding a revamp of the games visual FX. But it's amazing that you guys felt that it was okay to officially release PA before delivering on all the Kickstarter milestones (i.e. physical goods and documentary).

I have to hand it to Uber though, PA is still one of my favourite games ever. You've made a great game but I believe your project management could be improved a lot and next time you try to gather support for a new project don't say things like "And we have delivered on it". Be honest and say "And we are going to continue to work on PA until it's done".

Maybe next time you guys can find some sweet spot between going Full Indie and working with a publisher.

It really is a big joke that the game is being sold at an 85% discount before they've even delivered on all the Kickstarter promises. When taking into account the costs of running servers, how does selling the game at this price even cover your costs for adding additional servers to accommodate the additional players? Or are you just packing more and more players onto the same servers. Your server performance is terrible and you promised games "with 40 of your closest frenemies and thousands of units" and we get server slowdown with even 5v5 matches.

I have a love/hate relationship with this game. I wish it wasn't so.

Did that already, still same error message.

I do see PA.exe being run, but I don't see another program being launched for the local server, anyone know what it is called?

*edit, I found a "server.exe" file, and I ran that, and in the game, I now see a login on the top left... but, still won't let me 'fight', says server not found.
When I run "server.exe" it has 1 window that says "no Sim" and the other cmd window has some openGL info and stuff like that.

Also, anyone know what ports the server is expecting to be open on LAN?

Did you turn on local server option in the settings? If so, when you play a single player game the game will automatically launch the local server for you

I've seen someone else have a similar issue, problem probably is locked ports.

First thing to test, try turning your firewall off and temporally disabling anti virus, if that fixes it you probably need to add some exceptions into the settings.

If not then we will have to ask the big guns to help out (@SXX, @deathbydeni. And @cola_colin).

Well that quote from Scathis felt like a straight piss into the face of any backer of this game, considering the state of the game and communication about it at that time.
The game has improved a lot since then, but for me it is still not at a point where I would say "boom, we delivered on this!".

The dictionary definition of "Delivered" is "provide (something promised or expected)."

When someone states categorically that they have DELIVERED, without specifying what they have delivered (like if it was the case of a partial delivery) then they mean they have DELIVERED on ALL their promises.

The game still had major things missing when he made that statement (hence the continued development). And the development still continues today when the game is now being sold at an 85% discount. But John Comes wasn't just talking about things "gamewise", He was saying they have delivered on their Kickstarter, listen again to the video from the 5:30 mark this time to get the full context of his statement. They still haven't delivered all the physical goods or the documentary, let alone servers which can handle multiplayer matches "with 40 of your closest frenemies and thousands of units". But we already see our beloved game sitting in the bargain bin. And how does selling the game at this price cover their server costs?

As I've already said, I have a love/hate relationship with this game. It's still one of my favourite games, even with all the problems it has, but stop defending them for the mistakes they have quite obviously made. Only when oneself has accepted their mistakes, can they make sure they don't make them again. This is why people didn't trust their second Kickstarter. It wasn't because they hadn't delivered on PA yet (because people are happy to wait if they know they will get what they were promised in the end), but it was because they said they had delivered. It's a subtle difference. Stop defending them. Where are our servers which can handle multiplayer matches "with 40 of your closest frenemies and thousands of units"?

i am not defending their mistakes ... what i do defend them against are people that act like uber were total liars and delivered anything whatsoever ... because that is a blatant lie ...

Going to close this as it's going back and forth at this point.

We will continue delivering updates for PA as long as we can afford to, and continue working to make it the best game we can. This is something we would do even if promises or ideas weren't shared early on. As for what the final form of PA will be, that depends on what is doable with the resources we have available, as well as what actually turns out to be fun (as we'd probably cut something that wasn't fun, even if it was promised".
