    Hey folks,

Before I launch into the nitty-gritty of my first world problems and how PA likes to crash on me, is there any thread(s) on how large a system you can generate with a decent PC before it falls over and dies in flames?

Having issues launching a game on an old system I made, way back when. Loads in the System Designer / Editor fine, previews fine. Takes ages to load in-lobby (local skirmish) and when the game eventually loads it just about gets ingame before dying on me.

    YOU NEED MOAR RAM!!!!!

Seriously if you have less than 16Gb RAM you're going to have trouble in solo and in the editor...

That's the main reason why I don't understand WHY über don't change the requiered spec for their game...

It's the only major issues you can have with this game...

Ahh, from beta and onwards (and forum posts) I thought I'd get away with 8GB, but if that's the limit then fair enough, I can work with that.

I'm shooting for 5 ghz clock speed per core, 64 ddr4 ram, sli pair of 980's, 3tb of Ssd, going to probably not have a case and instead make it open air

Sli is a bad idea imo... single 980 ti or one of the upcoming Radeon Fury cards would be a better option imo.... rest of the machine looks solid though :)

Depends on what CPU he gets... AMD centurion comes at 4.7ghz base with 5hz boost stock (that said it performs about the same as an i7 4970k @ stock speed, AMDs current stuff isn't very efficient)... Definitely achievable though :)

Well, sure if you want to sacrifice performance to get the 5 GHz you can do it. Even with all cores at 5 GHz it won't come close to a i7 4970K in most benchmarks.

Better get a custom water loop, phase change, or DICE, dude. Even with a NH-D14 and better fans on it you can't call an i7-3770K stable at 5GHz because you'll thermal crash when stress testing. And the D15 isn't better enough to help, and AiO coolers aren't worth it either. On topic-ish: I once asked Varrak about clockspeed and PA and he said that while it helps, in the end it isn't something holding the client back, and PA doesn't scale well to more than 4 cores (maybe 8 threads, so potentially 8 cores) on the client nor does the client scale particularly efficiently based on RAM amount since the game doesn't care how much there is--obviously more is still better!

(Screw dual 980's. You'll need a massive PSU and what a waste of money. Get a 980Ti or a Titan something-that-is-their-best. Also I feel like there was some sarcasm involved up there :p)

Actually you are wrong, I have an 8 gigabyte ram laptop with a gt 750m graphics card and an Intel I7, burns battery like a fire, although I am still able to run this at 30-40 fps with 8 planets, 20 with more

Sounds a little overkill given sc runs ok on my current rig (fx 8320 and an r9 280), albeit on medium at 1080p... Or are you shooting for 4k or vr with this thing?

Star Citizen is still a way off I can guarantee that, so there's no point investing in a 980 sli setup right now. If you do invest in a good setup don't go sli as even with direct x 12 on the horizon game devs arentl likely to properly utilise its features for a long time to come.

If you must get something now either get a 980ti (the performance is basically on par with the titan X), or wait a month just to see what AMD comes out with for their 300 series (Heard some pretty interesting rumors).

    EDIT:
Sorry derailing the topic a bit :)

Actually official launch of the Radeon fury is on the 16th and confirmed first hbm gpu on the market (not surprising since amd co developed the tech with hyinx).

If the rumoured specifications are true it looks to be a beast of a card...

So with all these specs in mind is this the reason why my PA game fails to load the game more or less instantly?

For example when I play galactic war or skirmish i normally cannot move/see my commander 4-5 minutes into the game and very rarely get to choose where to spawn. I've never had a fair start as by the time I am able to move and start building things I am already at a disadvantage and this has been a frustrating issue for me as I don't know whether its my specs which or internet or the game itself that is causing this. RAM is 4Gb and processor is i7-3610QM CPU at 2.30GHz.

Any insights/advice would be helpful and appreciated.

4gb ram is the problem I think. If pa doesn't have enough ram, it builds planets into your swap file on your hard drive, which is very very slow compared to ram. thankfully you can add ram to a laptop quite easily, and your cpu (which can't be updated) is really good for a laptop part.

For context I play pa quite well on my old laptop, which is worse than yours in every way except it has 8gb ram (core i5 460m dual core, 8gb ram and an nvidia gt420m gpu). I have to play on low graphics due to gpu, but it loads up quickly and plays fine on most maps.
