16-32 Player FFA and Team Games On Weekends

    Quitch says evil twins finals will run for 5-6 hours which means after midnight UTC / 17:00 PST.

    Today we hosted around 7 hours of big games.

    Server stats during that time:
    • peak RAM usage of 24GB
    • peak network of 20Mbits/s
    • peak CPU equivalent to 9 of 24 cores (48 threads)
    • typically CPU bound on 2-4 cores

    Next weekend or in April we should organise one or both of the following to open the big games:
    • clans vs clans eg BRN vs DNGR vs RLM vs PAG vs VoW vs CULT vs etc all in one big team game
    • uber only FFA

    Uber only FFA would be cast-worthy I reckon. Clan based big games would be fun too I think. Not sure if Uber ranked players would be interested in FFA though, but it would be fun :)

    Would probably need some decent planning if you are wanting 10-20 Uber players together in one room, at the same time.

    Not sure how to load them yet but I have replay files for most of the games except when the server crashed twice.

    From the start of the evil twins finals to the end of the last game was over 12 hours.

    A big clan vs clan team game would compress clan wars into a single winner takes all game.

    Ideally we would have a custom map designed for this game and any rematches.

    Would my RNA system work? I might have to adjust spawns but it's balanced metal wise for any amount of players.

    Replays will be available for all completed games this weekend.

    Sadly the replays from last weekend are corrupted due to a defect in that build which has now been fixed.

    I totally agree with you. I'm limited to the same CPU you are.

    Also, $4 heatsink with the BOX version. Silly Intel. (It doesn't come with a heatsink does it? )

    no LGA2011 cpus and up don't come with heatsinks. there's a limit to every kind of silliness.

    Couple of interesting games and some really bad ones today. We need some good maps from the map makers.

    The sim dropped to 3 fps in one team game as almost 10,000 units were being hoarded on multiple planets. One team had over 6,000 units on a 500 radius moon!

    Another game suffered due to what seems to be planet size and lots of CSG.

    Replays will be available to download tomorrow.

    We might do some games before King of the Planet 12 (KOTP) next weekend and the server will be used for the Rainbow Racers Grand Prix after KOTP.

    Next proposed time bracket will be 11th April 21:00 UTC / 14:00 PST / 12th 10:00 NZT

    Server stats for today:
    • peak RAM usage of 20GB
    • peak network usage of 33Mbit/s
    • peak CPU equivalent to 7 of 48 cores
    • typically CPU bound on 2-4 cores
    • largest compressed replay file 1.67GB (10,000+ units game)
    Due to lack of availability in the US we used a SoftLayer server in Toronto with the *same* specs as Dallas.

    Based on the above People rocking an Intel i7 with suitable upload would be fine for a server.... I'd even go as far as saying my fx would probably do the job reasonably with its 8 cores (sadly I only have 5mbit upload though, despite have fibre with 50mb downstream, UK isp are so stingy on upload rates :( ).
