Everytime I try to start a game using a custom system (on AI Skirmish) the game freezes (including the music) then eventually black screens, and during this time I am completely unable to Alt+F4 out, Alt+Tab, or Ctrl+Alt+Del our of the game. It has made the game nearly unplayable. I have already updated my drivers and have the absolute newest, I have disabled Steam UI, and I have even tried the standalone launcher, but none of them work. Please help! I really want to play this game
Can you post your DxDiag please (if you're on Windows)? I'm on mobile so if you don't know what it is just google it Just have to drag the text file onto a new message post.
Do you have trouble with other games as well or is it specific to Planetary Annihilation? Also, you could try a clean boot to rule out any funky software from interfering somehow.
It is specifically PA, no others games are even close besides the occasional lag spike in Age of Empires 2 HD
Do you notice similar issues when playing on a computer-generated system rather than a custom system?
It has the issue with custom systems and systems generated using the system builder, but the standard systems the come pre-loaded (such as Berg) work great as long as they are under 3 planets...
It sounds like you may be experiencing issues with RAM. As more planets are added, or grow larger in size, more RAM is needed to support it. Here's a post that can help explain how to minimize RAM usage: https://forums.uberent.com/threads/how-to-improve-performance-all-video-cards-driver-links.53165/ You may want to try reducing the size of the planets in your custom system, or reducing the amount of planets in the system.
That seemed to do the trick, thanks! However, I did make a few more systems and for some reason I encountered a bug where if I edited anything with the planet, the minimum radius would become 1000, so I just went with smaller systems
You must've been playing on very large systems to run out of 8GB of RAM. Usually it's only an issue with 4GB or less. What size of systems were you playing on?
I'm currently looking into this bug. Did you place a moon to orbit a gas giant? I've noticed an issue with moons orbiting metal and lava planets as well. Any repro steps you may have could really help us out. Thanks!
How much HDD space do you have left? If you're running out of ram on large sytstems and there's no room for the extra HDD cache, then you might freeze. Unless that's not how that type of thing works. Just guessing.
@mkrater It is primarily when I try to make non-moons (such as lava or metal planets) small and orbit a gas giant. @killerkiwijuice I have 104 GB of 1 TB free, I think I'm pretty good
