Okay so I showed everyone that new monster computer I got.. Well I'm having an issue. My hard drive with windows 10 won't boot, it tells me "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media on selected boot device and press a key." The odd and annoying this is that this Hardrive works on my laptop fine and dandy, and in fact I've gotten my hard drive with Zorin OS to boot up fine on my new PC. What's wrong here?
Have you tried turning it off and on again? Sorry, had to say it. Anyway, my guess would be you haven't gone into the BIOS settings to tell it to boot from the driver you've just thrown in there.
Okay for some reason it's backwards, so start from the last image. <iframe class='imgur-album' width='100%' height='550' frameborder='0' src=' Edit: Btw most bad *** bios screen I have ever seen.
Oh hey! We have the same BIOS! That may or may not help! Make sure your drive is plugged into what you think it's plugged into. No point in configuring for port A when it's in port B. I'll look at mine when I pull myself out of my comfy warm soft bed... It may take a while.
Honestly this desktop is a bit of a mess of wires. There are two bits thst connect into the Hardrive and then an extra one of those bits. (The largest one with the words SATA on it, I assume for two hard drives.) However only one of the smaller bits.
Why can't desktops just have you plug Hardrive in like laptops? ;_; Also yes I realise that's a laptop hard drive, but they use the same connections. (And like I said the linux harddrive boots, which is also a laptop harddrive.)
What do you mean by that? Either of the ports with the SATA brand on them connect to hard drive, but only one at once.
diagnosis is you have windows installed. install an actual operating system. no ****. Sarcasm aside this could be MBR-related issues. Oh and golly-gee would you look at that, ubuntu live usb keys specialize in fixing those. You can't have a MBR-type system with an UEFI type system, it'll only boot the MBR. i'm guessing the windows 10 and zorin are on separate hard drives. (this isn't a problem, just showing off) in think your zorin was installed in MBR since it's impossible that your old crap laptop had UEFI. however the windows 10 only come in UEFI mode? EDIT : yes win10 forces UEFI by default here's a couple sources that lead me to believe this : https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspx https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn336946.aspx Here's what you do. get that handy zorin install usb key you made and install zorin again (first boot zorin on the usb key to move all the files from your old zorin over) make sure in the motherboard boot window you select the UEFI mode for the usb key. have all the hard drives plugged in. install zorin on top of the old zorin, this will automatically create correct boot entries for both oeses. it should, look I'm not certain about all this, you've given me nothing to work with here there's like a billion more things you could have said. you should really boot up first with the usb key in uefi mode if at all possible to assertain that what I'm saying is true. f11 (hammer it) normally brings up the boot menu when the computer starts up, that looks like this : https://www.google.fr/search?q=bios boot menu&safe=off&espv=2&biw=1855&bih=993&site=webhp&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=m3T6VL-9Icj9UOOQhKgG&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&dpr=1#safe=off&tbm=isch&q=usb boot menu but it'll say anyways what key does what on the motherboard splash screen. as you can see from the many screenshots, on UEFI motherboards you'll have the UEFI option in there for the USB key. EDIT : for anyone coming down hard on me because I'm spouting bullshit, bear in mind my thinking is shot it's 4:60 in the morning and I'm a tad drunk.
Disconnect everything except the essential equipment to run the PC AT THE BARE MINIMUM and tell me if it still happens.
My key is odd it's ctrl+(something can't remember atm x3) Anyway sorry for not enough info.. I didn't know what else I'd tell you, and I was tired.. accidentally fell asleep in fact ^^;
I think I know your issue... This hdd Was configured from a laptop yes? Thing is laptop manufacturers do strange things with their installations and include additional partiotions for recovery and stuff. Had an issue moving from mechanical to ssd in my Dell laptop- had to exactly copy the first two special partitions without realigning to the ssd or it simply wouldn't boot up. The solution is to reinstall Windows if you no longer need the drive. Also trying to boot windows on different hardware to what it was set up on may not be possible anyway. By contrast linux is more flexible in that regard.
Aw dang, now I need to wait forever to move all my files to an external hard drive again.. Plus reinstall all my steam games... ;-;
that is a non issue. steam patches the registry key only when all the right files are already in place. it can thusthly reinstall a thousand games in a second. btw your boot menu key may be tab. could you confirm the zorin and windows 10 are on separate hard drives and that the windows was installed after zorin on the new PC while zorin was installed on the laptop?
