EDIT: OUTDATED! Jables is awesome and fixed this issue with a one-line post Today @jables announced that, what started as a weekly video contest, will change into a monthly one. Arguably, the submission frequency of "cool PA videos" in the threads created by @jables did not match a weekly competition. One may argue that the reduced visibility of the threads and the (intentional) imprecise description of what videos make good candidates made participation/interest seem lower than, I think, it really is. The main issue with changing into a monthly schedule are all the missed opportunities for timed trailers and announcement videos. Clearly, if the community wanted to make public announcements in such a good place as the in-game video tab (can't really think of a better place at all) 3 slots each month are not enough, and it seems awkward that community announcements should compete for visibility with other PA videos which focus in actual in-game content, like those wonderful "wow! much annihilaser! such nuke! very halley!" videos, casted matches/replays and tutorials. I think there is a very simple solution to this problem and it only requires a tiny bit more work by @jables (as compared to only a monthly contest but actually less work than a weekly one): allow for more than one category of videos. Or in its simplest incarnation: have separate community-driven-event trailers contests and game-content video contest. Short suggestion of how they may work (based in what the typical ativity around the community looks at the moment): Community Event Trailers and Annoucements Bi-weekly contest for the 2 most voted event trailers that are deemed serious (proof of the actual organisation of the announced event must be provided). Sometimes the contest entry may be empty, which is fine, and others it may be very populated, in which case @jables may judge from the context and upload more than 2 if he sees fit. Game-Content Videos Monthly contest for the 3-5 most voted videos (I think a considerably longer timespan requires a slight expansion of the top selected videos). This is the perfect place for tutorials, replays, funny videos, casted games, etc. As I said above, the Trailer and Announcement Contest may be empty sometimes (although I doubt that will be the case when all regular organisers of PA online events are aware of this feature) but having the possibility by default seems like a very good idea to maximise game visibility and community expansion. Other than this chages - allowing for community announcements and quality PA videos to be publicised in-game independently - I will only suggest visibility of the voting threads and a good description of videos elegible for each of the contests.
I think monthly is fine, it would allow a good body of videos to accumulate. then we'd also have more reason for the categories above.
I agree on having a better body of vids with a monthly contest but my OP was intended mainly to stress that good opportunities will be missed for community-driven-event trailers to get to as many players as possible.
I would prefer that announcement videos stay out of the contest. A monthly contest with all the other videos is fine. For the announcements I would like to see Uber give some control to trusted community members. So there could be a section in the PA video menu for announcements and some community members could get the rights to edit that section. Or implement a calendar that is managed by some players. The community has proven that it is willing to organize a lot of things (there is even the great ingame chat which should be an official implementation) and I think it would benefit everybody if the community gets a spot for ingame tournament announcements.
Yes that would be the ideal scenario, but it requires more work. I do hope something similar to what you suggest gets implemented in the (not-too-distant) future but I was suggesting this as a temporary measure.
If there is any announcement trailers, just send me a PM and I'll post them to game. That part's easy
