streaming in pa

I know you an me have talked a bit about it this before but i just wanted to share some things. So I went to a conference a few years a go. It was an animation and gaming development conference. One of the speakers was a guy called Alex St. John. A very interesting man with a wealth of knowledge and has seen many talented people develop. My friend approached him and she asked him about what to do if people in the industry discriminant against you because you are woman. He basically said ignore it. You can't let it phase you. You have to keep doing your best and keep persevering regardless. He said of females who he knew that had come up against it but they didn't let it get to them and now they are in really high positions in their fields. People will find things to discriminate against you for regardless of who you are. They will use your skin color or your gender or your looks or your personality to degrade you. You just can't give up.

Now please don't think that I am implying that harassment and all that is right because I don't think it is. However I do feel that if you put yourself in public eye you are opening yourself up to criticism and harassment. It is just something that comes with the territory. It is something that you will have to learn how to deal with and be prepared to encounter it. This goes for both men and women. Ana Kasparian is a strong and beautiful woman who I really respect.

Okay I can't get the video to play from where I want it. But start at 4 minutes. You can watch the rest of the stuff but that's not what I am referring to and it is rather long.
For myself what she said in this video helped shape my views on it. There is a lot of stuff that is said in that video but I am only referring to the things that were said that are relevant to this conversation.

The other thing that I did want to mention is about JennyTheSquirrel. I've told you before that I think shes brilliant but I wanted to elaborate on why I think that. Firstly yes she is attractive and she uses that. I think good for her. If she is comfortable doing that then why not. I sat and watched her for a bit and there are several things that she does well that will keep people coming back and building a community. She interacts with her audience, this is a major one. If a streamer interacts with their audience it is so much more enjoyable to watch. She gets up and dances when she has down time between games. When she dances she explains how to do the dance and encourages her audience to dance with her. I love that because A) it's a fun thing to do and B) she is encouraging her audience to get active and moving, this is a very healthy thing to do as gamers more often than not sit for hours on end not really moving. She also to an extent preforms while she is gaming. She treats it as thou she was an entertainer. This makes watching her stream so much better. Most streamers just sit there and play a game. Personally I prefer it when the streamer injects their personality into what they are doing. I'm not saying that you have to be like JennyTheSquirrel but I think that she shouldn't be written off as just 'hot girl streamer'.

I wanted to write this to hopeful be somewhat helpful. Not really interested in starting a debate over what is and isn't ethical/sexist/anyotherconrovesy.png. I know that it is hard to deal with it and I hope you keep streaming cause I enjoy saying stupid stuff in the background of your stream. long post is long

Honestly i didn't think cam was a big deal, like pa being my first game i didn't realise being a girl would really matter at all,

@slocke i don't have a problem with jenny as a person or her stream, it's just people constantly told me how i should dress like her and.... GAH! like this might have started in BRN but it got linked to other people who weren't as subtle about.... things. ahahaha

But in general i just wanted to say thanks for your support guys, i just felt like i really needed to put out there how much it trolling and sexist comments can affect people as well as commenting that it's not really fair to blame female streamers on some things.... Apparently PA is a decent community and i would really like to see more girls in this community so it'd be great to see an amazing and lovely community for them to come into =D hehe I will try to be a scary monster when mean people come around... RAWR! XD

edit: Qzart said that said that apparently Boggles was made to feel really bad about what he said on my stream, also i heard there was more drama about casting and stuff... i didn't mean for more drama than a slap on the wrist, like yea, it made me cry but lets face it there are so many sexist people out there... as long as we learn and improve, we can move on.

You should buy Just Cause 2. Perfect game for venting. Not only can you take out your anger on pixels, but it'll also cheer you up because it's just so wacky and hilarious.

My favourite form of venting will still have to be 1v1-ing the person i'm annoyed at, win or lose, it really lets me vent because i shove all my anger into trying to beat the other person hehe <3

Yea i agree, but if as a community we can't change to be less sexist and alienating i think it's unfair to punish the few that get caught out because theyre names are well known.
One day the world will see girls just as another human and not something to make fun of heh =P And then girls will flock into gaming <3 hehe

I don't feel comfortable with you implying that the community is 'sexist' and 'alienating'. Of course there are individuals who are sexist but I feel 'unaware' and 'insensitive' are better words to describe the attitude of the community. Which is where having conversations like this really does bring to awareness these topics.

Hah you and I would love to brainwash a whole bunch of girls and make them love PA but I don't think that is quite ethical. It would be cool if there were more vocal female voices in the community. I honestly feel that women just prefer different types of games (that is completely up for debate, you might be able to bait me into a discussion about it), my solution to that is just respect that girls just don't want to play PA and let them play any game they want. I mean the PA community isn't that big anyway. I'm just glad our clan has got a second girl. I was stoked when we got one. I hope this thread has been an example of how the community does support you. Keep up the good fight.

Now we need to work on whipping the anti-sportsmanlike players into shape.

Perhaps sexist and alientating are too strong of words to be using.... and i totally agree that females should be able to choose whatever games they want to play but i want to make sure this community is as welcoming as it can be so any female players that choose to try it will be more inclined to stay =3 hehe
Also i have to say urists comment on intolerance of the intolerant really stands out to me... just thought i'd put it out there heh =P

I'd advise against getting caught up in things you know nothing about.

Rule of thumb Max: Treat everyone on the Internet with respect unless they've given you a dang good reason not to. Jokes aren't well communicated on the Internet and a joke that shows no respect towards a person or a group is to be avoided completely. There is no humor to be found in such things and ultimately they do nothing positive for anyone. Isn't the whole point of a joke to create a feeling of positivity?
