We, Linux users, have been hitted pretty bad since months by the crashes. Please, fix it. Bug reference is : PA#2392 Best regards
Yeah, it still exists but luckily it is not that bad (this happens me very rarely nowadays) what it was before release, but I think that bug might in CoherentUI so there isn't much Uber can do about it.
Quit franly it is a pain because it will happen enough frequently to me to ruin a several hours play a day. Because after that you really can't engage in say competitive 1 vs 1. Beside, having that since years now, doesn't excuse the really poor support in CoherentUI for Linux. This product was sold with "Linux"! Knowing it is a fork of a browser working perfectly on Linux is a pain !
I have played about 160 ranked games and I think I haven't lost ever because of that bug. And if it happens, you can always close the game and then reconnect, 3min should be enough. What drivers are you using and what GPU do you have? And how much RAM you have?
Well, this bug just happen to me, and it happen yesterday as well... Let's face it: if that happen for windows, users will not accept it. Why should we do otherwise? Now the fun part : $ yum info akmod-nvidia.x86_64 ../.. Version : 331.113 $ lspci | grep NVIDIA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 660 Ti] (rev a1) $ lshw *-memory size: 15GiB
Well... I will. Still your way of dealing with this bug is weird to me: you have it too, so this is not a fix. Is it just the hope it will happen less frequently?
If there is nothing uber can do about it why should I be angry or anything, they do know already that bug exists. For me that bug happens maybe 2-3 times in week so it's not making the game unplayable. I assume that coherentlab has been informed about this and they are trying to resolve it.
Of course they informed coherentlab, probably since 2013, and as far as I know the response was "WONT FIX", because they are using a previous version of their product and they now are working on another version. Thus Uber could upgrade to this new version, but our money doesn't seems worth the effort to them. Which I do not accept anymore. I wont accept this idea of as we are minority, we are treated as 2nd class.
Please do not jump in the wagon without having a close look at it and repeating some magic solution that will fix anything like : "it's obviously your fault because you use outdated drivers". This bug has been confirmed by many people, everybody agree there is an issue with the UI on Linux which causes crashes, including Uber and CoherentLab. And btw, the situation with Windonws drivers and Linux drivers is not that similar: windows drivers are most of the time full of workarounds, special cases, low level libraries and on Linux there is a huge effort to not go the same road.
I run Linux and Windows- and the *proprietary drivers* from Nvidia or AMD are made by the same team that does Windows ones so don't give me the "it's different on Linux, cause Linux". If anything they're further behind windows, on the same hardware and game the Windows drivers are faster than Linux. PA doesn't crash *that often* on Linux from personal experience, and it also *does crash occasionally* on Windows. @jomiz isn't suffering these problem- there was a serious problem with Coherent on Linux, and some coherent devs actually got involved and pushed a fix, which Uber released. Since then the problem is 99% fixed. As I've helped *many* people in the support forum, old drivers *are a cause of many issues*. All I'm suggesting is you at least *test* updating your driver, as it shouldn't be that difficult to do (I don't know what distro your on, I use Ubuntu which is simply a case of selecting the new version in the Propitiatory drivers tool, and typing in my pass to give it admin rights). If your still crashing after that, then it's worth looking deeper. Given many others on Linux *aren't* having these problems I think the issue IS YOUR END. I don't agree that the game is fundamentally broken. @SXX and @DeathByDenim can give you more in depth advice if required.
A driver fulfils the same function regardless of which OS it is for. A driver for Linux is no less important than the same driver for Windows. There is no workaround for not having a driver; without a driver, software cannot communicate to the hardware.
As far as I know the BadAccess is still around. Though it has always been rare for me personally (once in the last three months or more?). What Uber (or rather Coherent Labs) have done so far is make an error catching routine. So rather then completely crashing PA, the error is now handled more gracefully. This can still result in a selection box getting stuck for example. Is that what you are getting, @sevmek ? In any case, it may be worth your while to also contact Coherent Labs directly about this. For example: https://forums.coherent-labs.com/index.php?topic=581.0 They worked with that user to get the bugfix I described earlier. They do actually care about their Linux users (as does Uber). Keep in mind that we are like the 1% or so. I don't know the exact statistics.
Just to let people know, I updated the driver and the crash in the UI is still there. $ yum info akmod-nvidia.x86_64 Version : 346.59 This driver was released : Release Date: 2015.4.7 As you can see here: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/83686/en-us The next one calling for an update on the driver, I will get some unit cannon out for you! AFAICT, DeathByDenim is providing usefull stuff. I'll deal with this the proper way, i.e. with upstream as adviced by him. Thank you. And yes, the issue is like you describded: "This can still result in a selection box getting stuck for example".
I know this is an old thread, but it's the latest one to mention bug 2392 and I didn't want to create a new one. I called out to Uber to fix this bug under their latest update [1] on Kickstarter, here's what they had to say[2]: [1] www dot kickstarter dot com/ projects/ 659943965/ planetary-annihilation-a-next-generation-rts/posts/1317661 [2] www dot kickstarter dot com/ projects/ 659943965/ planetary-annihilation-a-next-generation-rts/posts/1317661 ?cursor= 10814227#comment-10814226 PS I would've posted these as links, but am not allowed to do so.
In the mean time have you tried running pa with the '--softwareui' switch? That prevents ui crashes for me in ubuntu...
