Curious to see if anyone played this game from 1998. It was very fun and competitive online. It still has a pretty strong community even today. It had a full 3d world similarly to PA and distructable terrian. Your main unit, a shaman acted sort of like the hero unit from WC3 but a lot more powerful and destructive.
Played, it but not online, outside of the one-world pre-release demo. It wasn't as full-3D as PA - it was a 2D map wrapped at both sides (torus) with pretty good visual transforms - I didn't notice it until late in the campaign when I saw some visual tiling and watched as the map scrolled.
It may not have been as technically as 3d a PA, but it was still waaay ahead of it's time. The single player wasn't terrible, but multiplayer is where it really shines. You can still play it online today for free, it's actually pretty fun. Has built in twitch streaming and viewing, leader boards and a point system, pretty much everything you can think of.
For anyone interested they have an amazing online community to play the game competitively at. http://www.popre.net
