I'd imagine the more widely used spellings in anything officially recorded or published would be the indication of proper spelling.

By that metric, American spellings are more correct.

    Couldn't not take the bait.

Also by that metric, mandarin would be the most correct language to use. :p

Fifty-Six percent of all online content is in English. Its pretty much indisputable that the internet is the largest repository of publications on the planet.

But we're not talking about choosing between languages, we're talking about what the standard is for a given language. What's more, you clearly knew the distinction before you posted. :p

I personally don't have a problem considering American English and British English separate. It's just that if British English is going to compete it's going to lose.

a good portion of that english is published by chinese. chinese are renowned for being well learned in more than one language and very often two languages very foreign to their own. English, spanish, french...

    that statistic really means nothing.

I personally wouldn't be surprised if in the near future a switch to a predominantly mandarin internet is made. why not?

yes english is a flexible and easy to learn language. but so is mandarin. it's in fact a language evolving quite fast to meet the requirements of it's time. the youth dictate the new words and their meanings. much like urban language for english.

the quantity of speakers will remain the deciding factor.

Regardless of who is using the language, the point is that English is being used more in a recordable capacity. I was just debunking the claim that Mandarin is the best language by the metric I put forward when it doesn't. No other measure of validity was brought up or argued.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mandarin overtook English sooner or later. But right now, English is the most recorded written language. And again, that's besides the original point where shots were fired against American spellings.

@arseface haha, ok ^^ I'm just trying to help us cope with the hard truth. it's not one I want to face either. I went through the hardships of learning french enlgish and spanish and mastering the first two, learning mandarin isn't exactly the thing I want to do most now. I'd love it if english would just stay the most used language.

and I also quite detest alot of the british spelings. Phoenix, for example. quote Scroobius Pip on that one, god damn!

and look at my sig! I have to deal with it everyday! :D
