Probably the planet curvature and fresnel effects on the water. The opacity of the water is mostly controlled by the distance between the water surface and the first hard surface drawn behind it. When you're zoomed in you're viewing the water at an angle so most things are "further away" and thus more fogged than looking straight down. The same thing happens in the real world.

Flipping the model upside down is a great trick if you have a flat surface to mirror against and cut the reflected model. Our water surface is a polygonal sphere so a simple flipped mesh doesn't work as well. Most real time reflection techniques are based around the assumption of a "flat surface" or reflecting things that are infinitely far away which makes them worthless for our use. I had planned on implementing some form of screen space reflections, but this simply didn't happen.

So since PA is 'technically' still prerelease... Can Uber add this? (to the engine)

PA was officially released 5th September, 2014.

I dunno if you misunderstood or your lawyering me. I know it's been "officially released" but only games that are complete get officially released, and PA isn't an officially complete game. Therefore my previous post.

    So you're saying...
    PA is:
    "officially released"

    PA is not:
    officially released

I don't think using quotation marks in this manner is particularly helpful.

Arguing that PA was released before it's official release date, because it was released from it's developer-only state into consumers hands a long time ago, could be a sensible discussion to have, but arguing that it still hasn't been officially released? I can't even imagine why you'd think that.

Anywho, I'd like fancier water and reflections and stuff in PA, but there are a quite few other things higher up on my personal priority wishlist right now :)

How do the guys from 'The Universim' do their water effects? (No screenshots since print screen doesn't work on the prototype)
By looking at their prototype, which can be downloaded via the link below, their water seems more realistic when zoomed out. And you can clearly see the difference between shallow/unshallow water since the shallow water is very very white compared to the deeper water which shows you the bottom of the ocean clearly. Zoomed in their water looks too static though.

I really do love their weather effects, even if they don't add any gameplay ;)

Activation key on that site as well ;)

If you don't want to download the program, there are a lots of videos from this on YouTube.
I would say it is more visually appealing, but I wouldn't call it more realistic.

They way Universim seems to handle water is what I wanted from PA. Actual depth. Imagine if the subs were moving deeper, among canyons and undersea mountains, with ships floating atop not knowing they were about to get sunk. It would add greatly to the fun of the naval game.
