I'm having 2 different problems that I think may actually be related.

    1) No icon appears over metal deposits. This varies in how detrimental it is, but on some planets it becomes really hard to spot the metal deposits without the icon.
    2) The game often crashes (pa.exe has stopped responding). This appears to happen most often when there's a nuke effect or some other extra bit of graphics.

Quick system specs, in case the DxDiag upload doesn't work right:
    CPU: Intel Core i7 920 @2.67 GHz
    RAM: 12GB
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4850, Driver version 8.970.100.1100 (date 4/29/2013)

I have a suspicion the answer will come back that my video driver is too old... but as far as I could find it's the most recent version available.

    Thanks!

Yeah, you are probably correct and you drivers for your card are indeed the legacy drivers. Though the ones I found on the AMD site seem to be from October 2013, instead of April.

It is also possible that you accidentally pressed the keycombo that turns of the metal spot icon. I think it's <Ctrl>+Y. You can check the keys under [SETTINGS] -> [KEYBOARD] -> [GENERAL]. It's called "Show/Hide Visual Aid Overlays".

On other alternative is to set up dual boot for Linux as the drivers for your card are still updated there... It's a bit of work though.

Actually had already downloaded the driver via that very link (the October date is for the Catalyst Control Center, not the driver itself I guess). I've seen people mention beta drivers for the HD 4850 in other threads, but the links in those threads have always taken me to the general ATI driver page and I could never find the beta driver they were talking about...

Sadly it's latest driver. It's just signed on official site as "October", but there was no real changes from December of 2012.

Your log file don't have crash info in it, but most likely you can't do anything about that on Windows because such issues or crashes it's problems within driver. If there any chance you ever used Linux you can play PA there as open source AMD drivers have none of these problems.

I guess I'll try Linux then. Haven't set this particular computer up to dual boot yet, but my laptop's been set up to dual boot windows and Ubuntu for as long as I've had it and my previous desktops have done the same. I never realized that Steam had released for Linux to even know that was an option... I'll give that a try and hope it helps. Thanks.

Only thing you need for playing on Linux it's add "--software-ui" launch option that way:
    • Right-click on the game title under the Library in Steam and select Properties.
    • Under the General tab click the Set launch options... button.
    • Enter the launch options you wish to apply (be sure to separate each code with a space) and click OK.
    • Close the game's Properties window and launch the game.

If you'll need any help with this feel free to contact me on Steam.
Will be happy to give few hints to increase open source drivers performance.
