“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ******* what." ― Stephen Fry

All the better reason to ask for them. It can prove dishonestly and it requires effort. I know that when I like to troll, I'm as lazy about it as I can be. You're very right about the forums, but if somebody is willing to leave something like this, then I'm sure that they could also consider leaving the game behind. If the chat takes away from the fun, then why play? I know that if I find the social aspect of something ruining the fun for me, I'm done with it.
Repeat offenders, violations of contracts, etc. There's no reason to ban them unless it's unbelievably extreme. I mentioned it just to remind about the contract. There have been people on the forum's with usernames that violated these rules and were forced to change them. It's rare and extreme, but still a possibility.

Ew, responding to points totally ruins any hope of transitions.

"... so ******* what." Well, so you're a jerk (not you, jamiem, this Stephen Fry guy, don't want any confusion here :D). Nobody is ever given the right to be disrespectful. The choice, yes, but that doesn't mean they should. Which, really, is the issue. If people weren't jerks just to be jerks, none of this would be needed and we wouldn't have anything to disagree on. Since we can't stop people from choosing to be jerks, people are forced to come up with ways to mitigate or eliminate this issue.

Edit: another thought I thought up with my thinker: I like things to be fair to as many people as it can be. People being jerks without any repercussions and damaging the fun for others isn't very fair. If you're going to be a jerk, eventually you'll get what's coming to you and while I don't think it should end their fun of the game (i.e., a ban), it should teach them that harassing simply isn't acceptable in Uber's community.

Nearly as strange as the quirk displayed by oh so many on the internet- that thanks to the relative anonymity they feel they have the freedom, even the right, to treat other people in ways that they would never dream of face to face....

I have the right to offend anyone, everyone else has the right to offend me - hardly a problem.

In life, perhapse (depending on the country you live in, free speech is not a right in the UK contrary to popular belief). On this forum however? Or in the game for that matter?

According to the forum rules, and the terms of service for the game, no you don't have that right.

Actually you have no rights inside of the game nor the forums as they're owned privately by the developers. Not to mention it's the internet.

Now let's say you hosted a private server, well then you'd be fine doing whatever you wanted.

Why did you censor yourself? Do you feel the censored part is not appropriate?

The forums auto censor things that are inappropriate.

well perhaps that is the answer for in game as well.. and everybody wins.. People can call others every foul name they want to, and the people will only see "You are an *****".. though with some intelligence the system could use word substitution and change it to "awesome friend" :D Every insult would turn into a compliment. I can only imagine how furious those people would become. Can you imagine the rage quits after an epic temper tantrum?! lol

    Honestly
    This

This is perfect actually. Not only will it kill the hostility, it makes the insulter look silly, and it removes the ability to harass someone.

No purpose in banning someone who keeps calling you a "Cool guy" if that is all that gets through a very hostile and rude player.

People saying horrible things is only part of the issue. They also disconnect right before their comm dies or delete your comm in a team game. I want to be able to punish the jerkoffs who do this. I want to see them completely banned from the game. Alas I am not in charge of enforcing it unfortunately. There should be some way to enforce punishment for bad sportsmanship so that it deters people from acting this way.

There should be encouragement for being friendly and nice after a game. Like saying 'oh damn you got me here really good, that was nice' rather than '**** you piece of ****'. Not only would this foster better player interaction that makes people want to keep playing more and more, it could also help people learn quicker and easier. People may be more inclined to ask for advice on where they went wrong if they don't get responded to every time with '**** off noob trash'. If someone were to ask me nicely after a game what they did wrong I would happily go though the entire replay and talk it over with them. If they just said 'how the **** did you beat me you ******* faggot???' i would dc straight away and not waste my time. There are more benefits to having a friendly non-toxic community then just protecting people from getting offended.

Learning how to deal with losing is important. Practicing being humble when you win is a good thing. Good behavior should be encourage and bad behavior should be punished.

I think some people on this forum think that the community is everything. Well they are wrong. Most people only care about playing the game. Most people are mature enough to understand that this is the internet, people say things, and none of it means anything. If we've never met, you beat me at a game and I call you a ******* ****. then you can't possibly be offended because I don't even know you. If we spoke for a month on a forum and I called you the same then you might well be offended because you know that I know your personality and think of you badly.

Moderator edit: don't try and bypass the word filter.

free speech shouldn't apply to a privately held company/game...

but if that company/game wants to sell more copies, then it might want to keep the trolls away.

recently joined my first 1v1 ranked game...

told the guy im not that good but i needed to get some experience...

"cool story bro" which is fine...
i then tell him not to go easy...
"get aids and die *******" then he proceeds to die on planetfall? maybe he is gaming the rank system? no clue

but i will tell you this, im writing a post on a forum instead of playing another game

it's all about the experience of enjoying a game...i've bought 2 of Uber's games...smnf and this, but if they don't worry about the player experience i might not wonder about their new title

p.s. i have to admit after he insulted me with the aids comment i asked "do you kiss your dad with that mouth?"

I really doubt any group of people had ever declared "a right to offend" you could try to say that it is included in freedom of speak but there are many things you can't say in many countries (threats is one of the most common).
Laws doesn't magically disappear when you play a game and in addition you have to comply with the user agreement and in addition to all of that you can also choose not to be a jackass or be like you (hey you gave me the right to offend you, I don't give it to you btw ;)

Which is why I said that basically anything except threats of violence is legal and should be ok in the game and thus I believe the EULA should be amended.
