Technically, it's a huge improvement over showering boats etc with bullets. At least a laser has the potential to surgically disable enemy vehicles and missiles etc with minimal loss of life

Eh, nonlethal weapons. Technically used for warfare, but without eating ourselves and our environment up as fast.

It is like the nicotine patch, of weapons. If we aren't going to quit cold turkey, we can at least quit using so much gunpowder and lead and blood, when we can simply use powerful nonlethal weapons like microwaves.

This has been a thing for a while now. In fact you slowpoked so hard that there's probably a space battleship in orbit.

i saw ProjectRho and thought "dude i read that entire website already! you're so 2000late"

You say it with sarcasm, but this is at the very heart of modern weapon design. Modern bombings are done with a single, high-precision missile from a UAV with the pilot far away in safety. WWII bombings were done with B52 Superfortresses that sent thousands of tons of bombs over entire cities burning it to the ground, with everyone and everything down there a victim.

War got a whole lot less messy. This laser is the next step. Less collateral. Less damage.

Of course, whether you think war is good and glorious is subjective. But the reason people want to design these things is to make war less messy.

Not if it's a regular-looking satellite equipped with a laser cannon.

    Battleships are not laser satellites.
