The idea is as simple as old. I was inspired by the Mini Mods cast yesterday and came to the conclusion that PA needs more game modes. I loved to see a "King of the Hill" mode for PA, which would work in single- and multiplayer. It could work as 1vs1 or with several steams, as single planet system or even as multi planet system. Also it should not be too complicated to implement (at least I hope it wouldn't).

The idea is following: There is an artifact (maybe the unit cannon) positioned in the middle between both players spawn (or on a central planet if playing as multi planet system). The goal for both players is to hold this object for a given time frame to win the match (maybe 10 min). For making it more difficult to hold the position and force the player to keep his initial base, there should be no metal spots close by. To hold the artifact, the player has to position his units within a given radius around it.

There are some possibilities to tweak the gameplay which have to be discussed:
    - the time can be either accumulative or starts again as another player conquers the artifact (then the time for sure should be lower than 10 min)
    - instead of a counter it could be possible to win the game by reclaiming the artifact
    - if it is a shared team game it could be interesting if a commander has to be present near the artifact to win (would end the game to early if in a 1vs1)
    - only ground units should count as units for holding the artifact

What do you guys think about it?

According to prior Uber comments it's already in the game, just play a map with an Annihilaser on it.

I don't agree with that thought, a game mode should something specifically chosen by the players and the Lobby should make it clear that a specific game mode is active, not simply based on the inclusion of a specific planet type in most if not all circumstances.

Derail how? It's very valid that having a metal planet in a system feels very much like a king of the hill mode..

He's asking for a dedicated king of the hill game mode, either across multiple planets or on one planet with zones to capture/control.

There was no reason to bring up metal planets, even if they act similarly at the moment. He just wanted to spite Uber once more, I'd never imagine Knight would go as far to derail a thread for that cause.

Maybe you should have a rant at him in private? Nobody cares about your shame towards KNight.
I would have brought up the fact that playing with metal planets feels like a king of the hill mode too!

Really, you could adjust this with mods as well.

Make a custom metal planet, divided off on the southern hemisphere spawns with metal only located down there, and the north pole all is wide open and metal-free, and the control points cost 5x more but if even 1 is built it causes a death explosion that kills everything on-planet with friendly-fire-off. So, you win.

This would obviously be a 1 planet game.

That's an assumption on your side. His point is completely valid. He is not derailing the thread - he's offering his opinion by not being a robot. Deal with it.

I just don't see how what he said was relevant, and I don't even like the metal planet being a faux king of the hill either, I agree with him in principle, I just don't understand why it was mentioned. Sorry to seem obtuse on the matter.

He mentioned it because it's relevant.

That's not relevant - this isn't discussing mods in ranked play, it's discussing an alternate game mode/victory condition.

I'm not even speaking of competitive play. I suppose KotH would address casual players or players that like to fight vs the ai. My thought was based in the fact that PA is lacking in different game modes while there is for sure a lot of potential.

On the one hand I can agree that the metal planet as with have if is similar to how I imagined a KotH game mode, but on the other hand it's just a very subtile one and it doesn't feel like another way of playing a match. I also don't want to start another discussion about how the laser and or orbital gameplay should work.

Probably a mod for testing the idea would be the best way to go, as the new system editor would at least allow to set up a 1 planet battlefield for it.

I'll make you a map for this @kaminfreunde just tell me what you want. I can make all spawns start with 1 mex, then have a center with like 20 metal making it basically win if you control the area?

That could be awesome... call the map 'the trap' or something like that.

Nice big map with low metal, apart from one area of high metal in a big hole with limited access. Very hard to defend as units and towers can be built around the edge and fire down at anything in the middle...

The only question is do we actually have any CSG brushes to make such a map?

Sure in fact random generation can make maps like that pretty decently. :p
