I've had two games in a row with the 6 planets + 2 asteroids, 1-metal configuration (5 AI + me). When I build the laser and destroy three planets, server.exe crashes with no message. (server.exe disappears from task manager) Two games in a row like this. The client freezes but remains zoomable until it also crashes about a minute later. Is this a known issue and any way to mitigate the crash? What's the maximum number of planets/AIs for finishing a game with laser without crashing the local server? Or do I have to space out the firing?
This sounds like something created by mods, because an invalid .json file or incorrect file path for the laser will do this. Not sure why this happens if you have no mods installed.
DxDiag looks alright. Strange. Could you replicate the crash, then go to %localappdata%\Uber Entertainment\Planetary Annihilation\Log and upload the most recent log file?
Maybe it is your page file? Code: Page File: 3413MB used, 12872MB available Based on the amount of RAM you have, you may want to increase your page file size to at least 30 GB. I think the server.exe crashed because it ran out of memory. Also, please update your graphics drivers: Code: Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.4GHz Card name: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 Driver Version: 10.18.10.3621 Driver Date/Size: 5/21/2014 00:33:40, 16586584 bytes The latest drivers can be found on the official Intel website: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&ProdId=3712
Log from the last game attached. I'm afraid not much is there from what I can see. @kjotak109 It shows Intel because of Optimus. The game is using the GTX 660M (you can see from the log and also the gfx monitor). The driver is 344.65.
This is the log of the game before last that crashed after a laser targeting. The server restart at the end is I guess from me trying to resume via menu->AI skirmish.
If you play on steam, verify the game cache. Also, did you say that after you destroy 2 planets with the annihilaser, the game crashes on the third? Does it crash right when the laser is about to fire? This kind of simulation error can only be caused by invalid jsons or paths afaik.
Actually, a new Nvidia driver (driver version 344.75) was released almost a week ago. You may want to check out that driver and see if it fixes anything. Link to Nvidia website: http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/79893/en-us Also, did you try increasing your page file?
Yeah, but Intel drivers still play a role, so do try updating those. Also, you are using an SSD, which means it may contain a tiny pagefile if the manufacturer decided to "optimize" things. This has been known to cause issues with PA. You can just keep the one on your G-drive, but disable the one on the C-drive. It will give you a warning because Windows is being silly, but meh.
I'm not sure if it's exactly when the laser is firing, because after selecting a target I'd zoom over to get a good view of the explosion, and I got a good view of the ones that didn't crash. I suppose a steam verify wouldn't hurt, but if this is about missing/invalid paths it should've crashed on the first firing not 3rd/4th? If this was a memory issue, it should happen as forces are building up, not when they are being destroyed, and it should be accompanied by slowdowns. The two games were very smooth up until the crash which happened specifically at the laser firing. The video driver is I suppose not the very latest but it's also the stable branch. As it stands I think it's not very probable that it's related although I'll update all of them before the next game. Btw it's server.exe that crashed, not the client. I'm suspecting more along the line of the server crashing because it has to massively re-path or re-strategize after three planets are suddenly gone, or maybe involving something in orbit. I dunno.
Oops, I missed the part about server.exe somehow. Yeah, graphics driver are irrelevant then. Sorry. Could you try running the same game on an Uber server? I.e. go to [SETTINGS] -> [SERVER] and turn the local server off? Are you still able to crash the server then?
Yep if the paths are wrong, somehow, it would crash on the first fire. I don't know what else this could actually be, but try denim's idea. might even be a problem with anti virus if you have any.
I'll go and try the online server later although I can't play anymore for today. Thanks for the input.
Apparently it does not crash on the online server, though I didn't manage to get the same 6+2 configuration. (It was a 8-asteroid system with 1 metal in the inner orbit.) I managed to destroy every asteroid in this game.
After couple more games, I'd like to update that it does crash the online server. It doesn't always happen but it does.
Well that's "good". It means that Uber can see the crash dumps easily and that the problem is not with your computer.
