I almost never play non-random maps. Playing on a set system is a rough disadvantage for any players not familiar with it.

Where's the option for "Randomly generated asymmetrical maps"?

Well, most people want to play fair maps in ranked. Randomly generated asymmetrical could give one player a big disadvantage. It would mostly just become a game of who gets the best spawn wins.

I think randomly generated asymmetric would be nice, because seeing how you play a lot of games on ladder it would even out the unfairnesses of the asymmetry. The best players would still top the rankings overall. I think it's kinda boring when you know where your opponent is and when winning games is based off map knowledge. I like the idea of having to adapt to a new map each time. On the current PTE you don't really have to scout so much as you know where your opponent is. I think the best players will win even when at a disadvantage, and the number of games will even out any unfairness in the maps.

Of course, efforts need to be made for randomly generated maps to be as fair as possible, but I believe AoE is played mostly on random maps, and that doesn't seem to bother people. Just need each start position to have a decent amount of mex.

That doesn't change the fact that playing on a screwed up spawn vs a perfect spawn is no fun.

On the subject of symmetry vs. Asymmetry.... only the start planets need to be symmetric! All other planets that are not spawn locations can be asymmetric.

That's why I say that efforts need to be made for the random start positions to be good, we aren't currently there yet, but I believe it must be possible to have random asymmetrical maps that while not 100% fair are still fair enough to be fun. There are quite a few RTS in the Age of Empires/Rise of Nations vein that have random asymmetrical maps and it doesn't seem to be a problem. Maybe it's not so simple, but I think just having a set number of mex at a starting position would go a long way.

The community actually already invested quite a lot of time to make the PA-stats 1v1 maps for you guys. They are asymmetrical maps that are as balanced as we could get them without going insane. The maps are in a mappack on PAMM and are still the most fun 1v1 maps i know. Not 100% balanced, but you always got a good fighting chance. I am sure there are some maps in the pack that you will enjoy we got a good set of about 10 maps or something.

I am actually certain with the new editor tools people will be able to make much better asymmetric maps as well.
But that just takes more time ;)

We understand asymmetrical maps can be balanced, but I'm near certain random asymmetrical maps are near impossible to get perfectly balanced.

Custom tailored asymmetrical maps are a slightly different story, however the issue with them is they require rigorous testing to find how fair they are and they take a looot of trial and error.
